Ericson Yachts in Southern California Area

Hello All, This is a bit of an odd request and I am new to the forum so I am not sure this is the right place to post.....

I live most of the academic year (where I teach) in the Bay area, but this weekend (starting today !) I will be going sailing in Newport Beach on Saturday (from Balboa Marina).

I am interested in learning more about Ericson boats (32/35/38). Ultimately, I may look at buying one but I don't consider myself a serious buyer at this stage...

if any members who have boats in the Newport (or maybe Dana) area (or possibly also Channel Islands, Ventura marinas as I will be stopping there) and would be willing to show them to me (I'm assuming you would be close by or going out anywaymaybe), please let me know.

I have a low expectation that schedules will overlap on short notice, but even if not this weekend perhaps another time.

Cheers,

A good place to start is reading a blog written by thiis guy who bought an Ericson 25 named Oystercatcher. A great writer, his blog totally got me convinced in buying my 25ft 1978 fixed keel Ericson. It's obviously about the 25ft, but it's a great blog about Ericsons in general.

Now I have a 35ft 1972 Ericson, and love it. Too busy to show it, but they're great boats. If one living on it, a 32 is big enough, for two I'd go with the 35 or 38. The best advice I ever got in the sailing community was- "Don't buy the biggest you can afford, buy the smallest you can get by with."

Also, unless you live on the boat, you'll need a large amount of $ to keep any boat in sailing order.

You mentioned Ericson models in the 32-38 range.

Thanks to the updated forum, it is now possible to search the blogs for a specific model. (Ericson renamed models every few years as designs were updated)

The blogs feature personalized owner repairs and impressions and are a good way to investigate a specific model.

To find all blogs on an Ericson 32-3, for example, Blogs/Search Blogs. Keyword, 32-3. Prefix, 32-3. Uncheck the subsequent boxes for convenience.

You can also search models for specific issues, using the drop-down menu. For example, 32-3 "fuel systems".

Members will respond to any question in the forums of course, but for independent study the new search function is useful.

stopped In Ventura in my trip back north and spotted this beautiful Ericson 38 in the boat yard . According to a quick internet search on the name it was recently sold .

What keel is that?

I think it's probably the Pacific Seacraft bulb keel option.

Going out on a limb a bit, it looks like the stock trapezoidal fin keel with a Mars Metals split bulb added on the bottom section to slightly increased the ballast ratio. (I would not do that unless reducing the draft a foot and then adding the bulb to maintain the same righting moment, but from the picture that boat looks like it has the deep draft keel already.)
If this guess is wrong, it's not even the first time today..... :)
