Refit my Ericson 27

Sailingfun

I still refitting my Ericson 27. I already replace all window, remove all electric wires and yesterday, on a very suicidal way, I removed the water tank (behind the diesel tank), the diesel tank (in a side of the lectrascan system) and the Lectrascan, among off course, become intimate with number 1 and 2 coming from the head.
I'm sure there is a very sophisticated way to do this job without end with poop all around your arm but I never find it. Any plumbing change includes a very deep descend to human waste, at least, on sailboats.
The old diesel tank is in generally good condition but start to show corrosion all around the floor so it's time to replace it. I found out brand new Moeller 19 gallons is around $200 so I'm looking for suggestions. Small one? maybe a different brand??
Regarding the water tank, it was plumbed with a garden hose and the condition was deplorable so I think to install two flexible Plastimo tanks. I used it before and always was great!
After finish with plumbing area, everything is ready to paint inside.
The lectrascan is a no working unit so I will replace with a compost unit, anyway, a 27 is just a daysailing sailboat.

I had a local Long Island Shop build a new aluminium fuel tank for my E29. It was $250. Here where the real saving came. Every Hose fit perfectly because all the fittings where i the right spot. That was a real savings in time and money.

Flush flush flush fresh water through your poop systems for a cleaner removal. FYI Febreeze does a great removing stick.

I lived nearby a marine consignation store. Sometimes you get what you need, sometimes nope and sometimes all you got is trash.
I went there today but all diesel tanks were or big or on a questionable condition. Before paying $200 I will be digging around. Tomorrow I'm going to the delta, there are a lot of yards around with diesel tanks removed from boats. Let's see if I got lucky.

Hi Sailingfun, I just got an E27 as well, I am just starting to plan on where to start my refit. From what you mentioned, it looks like Im im on the same direction as you are. Pluming, rewire, water tanks, replace outboard engine to name a few. Hope to see some pictures of your work soon and keep as updated.

Sure! I got today my flexible water tanks and the HVLP turbine machine to paint inside. I didn't do too much from the last week because was very windy around the bay area and work caught me. Will post few pictures soon.

Today was a very good day for start my primer deck project.
I used totalboat deck prime. The project come very easy!!! In fact, one of the easiest primer I used.
If you want to use this paint, there are two simple rules:
.- On the bottom has like 1/4 sediment. STIR TROGHFULLY!!!! , be sure you mix completely all that material BEFORE start painting. Shake does not gonna do the cut. Follow the instruction. Stir a lot!!

.- The "10% thinner mix" is not optional, the paint is very heavy unless you dilute a little with thinner

Paint dry fast and is ready for a second hand in less than 90 minutes. I will wait a little more. Anyway, I gonna sand in order to get a smooth surface.
A quart was enough for 60% first hand so I can say safely the proportion price/coverture is really good.

Just did a kayak with the Total Boat primer and love the stuff. I tried it straight and cut it very slightly (< the recommended 10%) with both their thinner and regular mineral spirits and both worked the same. The thinning helped it flow thinner and dry much quicker so I could get to sand and re-prime faster.

This was after lots of fairing and sanding with Total Boat TotalFair, mixing equal parts of yellow and blue to get green. Like their primer, it sands to a feather edge just GREAT! This photo shows how the green Total Fair can sand to the nap of the glass and how smoothly the first coat of gray primer sanded after showing spots I needed to touch up with more TotalFair.

BEFORE grinding this mess off and re-glassing. Note the edge tape that mates the top and bottom halves of the boat:

I finally finished with the paint part. Still need a few touches here and there. Now I can start the gruesome work reinstalling everything at the . I upgraded the infamous traveler for a straight one, adding a mast base, new blocks, and rope clutch. I do not like go to the mast for nothing under sail, everything must go to the cockpit. Also, I will install 2 self-tailing winches on top of the cabin plus a small hardtop to avoid the sun And after that, I need to start with the rior (new water installation, finish AC/DC installation and paint) so I think will finish this project on September. This sailboat caught a couple of friends who really like to buy it so for the right price.... everything is possible. My wife got today the new fabric and foam for the new upholstery. A lot of projects for a small sailboat!

Sailingfun, for what it's worth, I put two harken winch mounting plates under my self tailing winches after tearing up my shoulder working to take off the starboard side winch. Not that much $$ given the headache and the need for a double jointed elbow for the next time.

JPS27 Yes, thank you for the suggestion! I already got delryn mounting plates to support the winches. Normally I use Delrin on this case because it's "almost" as hard as aluminum.
Today it's almost 90 degrees here so I working on the plumbing section. I have 2 flexible water tanks so thinking about the water manifold and decide today... should I run PEX or vinyl reinforced hose? My ericson 27 does not come with a sink on the head so I'm building small support for the sink.

I used vinyl reinforce hose for the water tank. i rarely use the sink in the head since it just runs to the bilge. for the galley sink I use hose appropriately rated since it goes to a below water line through hull. Sounds like you're doing a lot of work. Share pictures when you get the chance.

I will... yes, was a long refit, almost a year... My sink goes directly to the water and will do the same with basin on the head. I removed the old lectrascan and replace it for a compost one. The boat is designed as a floating camping site so I removed the old, stinky holding tank with all smelly old hoses, much better...

Today I finished installing the boomkicker... and the plastic cover for rainy days. I installed that in every sailboat I owned. Very convenient!

My hardtop bimini arrives this week. Will install next week and finish outside just in time to start painting inside. New lines, sails just back from sailmakers with flying colors. Good for another year up to him. I got the new lines and I'm ready to install single line reefing lines.
The next big project will be the bottom paint and move to a different marina.
At the end, I will use with the family until next year, then, maybe sold it at the end of the season. Was a nice but endless job

I check all, and finally, I found C head is a good balance price/presentation. I used it for the last 2 years my liveaboard boat and It's a good product!
Highly recommendable!

Upgrade: Yesterday I clean and prime the v-berth forward cabin in order to paint before the rain hit the bay area, this weekend.
I found one forward cleat is leaking... I need to fix this today!!
Wheel rudder is coming back from Scandia, I paint the compass area and reinstall the stainless steel guard (and install new instruments)
Yesterday I reinstall the main and everything run perfectly with the new hard top!!
I need to accelerate in order to move the boat to the delta for bottom paint in January. From there I'm thinking to move the boat to Ballena Point, I'm very tired to navigate one hour up or back every time I want to sail the bay...
My wife gave me a new hygrometer watch clock and tide clock for the boat... Great girl!!WhatsApp Image 2020-12-30 at 8.34.35 AM.jpegWhatsApp Image 2020-12-30 at 8.34.36 AM (1).jpegWhatsApp Image 2020-12-30 at 8.34.36 AM.jpeg, watch clock and tide clock for the boat... Great girl!!

I just noticed this thread. Looks like a great job on the deck paint. That is a project I have for next spring/summer.

I am surprised your water tank was at the stern. Mine is under the V berth forward and I am glad to have the weight forward as the boat tends to be stern heavy.

Did you use totalboat for the the entire paint job?

Hi! Thanks!
The diesel and water tank was below v berth. Now, I installed a new diesel tank under the v berth and one flexible water tank at port and starboard.
Yes, the E27 is kind of light forward. I found some lead weight below mast on the cabin.
Rain is here for the next week so any ulterior work will be postponed until Jan. 10.
Yes, I use totalboat for all deck painting. Happy with the result. Very easy to work with, just don't forget to add thinner or mineral oil or paint will be very hard. But after reducing a little (no more than 5% in my case) paint runs smoothly.
