Hull registry? [HIN Decoding]

Is anyone cataloging hull numbers of still-sailing Ericsons?
296 here

There was a registry of production and hull numbers started not to long ago. I’m not as site navigation savvy as others but confident they will soon respond as well.

Curious...Are You referencing your hull number with the “296”?? Reason I ask is that is the hull number on our 1973 Ericson 32-II which I bought new in Ft Lauderdale, FL.

Anxious to hear....:egrin:

Weird. My full HIN is ERY25296M76C

??? Not too sure how to read the complete registration code but suspect possibly your boat is from 1976 (???) Is it a 25?? If so, was there a completely new numbering sequence???

VERY INTERESTING!!!!

Hopefully someone else can help us out?? ...Loren, Christian???? hopefully??

Yeah, she’s a 76 25’ centerboard. There was no 25-2 that I know of, so unless 6M means manufactured In June Of 1976, I figure she’s hull number 296.

Logical/rational thinking for sure. Now my curiosity is up and peaked for sure.

I’m really anxious for some of the more historically knowledgeable members to weigh in. ...I’ve always thought the Ericson numbering was consistent regardless of sizes or models. Apparently this is not the case (??).

K is for fixed keel, C for centerboard
That 0 blows the manufacturing month theory.
‍?

I don't know if that true, my Ericson is the centerboard version.

Edit**. The last number indicates the month of manufacture as such:

A = January
B = February
C = March
etc etc

my boat as “K” was manufactured in November

The mystery unravels. Now if we can hopefully figure out the numbering system used for various sizes and models

Here is the HIN decoder:

The first 3 digits are the USCG assigned Mfg ID Code (MIC) - ERY for Ericson

The next 5 digits (or more) are the MFG serial number. Ericson typically used model (25, 32, 36) for the first 2 digits and sequential numbers for digits 3-5 for a given model.
a) Low hull s/n get 'x" placeholders, i.e. my E33RH hull #3 was s/n XX3 and my E36RH hull #21 is s/n X21.
b) I believe Ericson used 4 digit serial numbers (6 total digits/ 13 digit HIN) for the E27 hulls 1000 up.
c) Ericson sometimes distinguished different series of the same model run by starting at the next highest first digit, my very early 1984 E26-2 was s/n 215. The 1986/7 (slightly modified) E26-3 had the s/n start with 300. The first E26 model was only built in the 60s and 70s, I assume they have s/n XX1 - 199. They WILL have different dates
d) There are two model 36. The Bruce King "cruising 36" built in the late 70s and the newer 1981-84 model by Ron Holland (completely different boat). The E36RH is NOT numbered as a new series starting with 100, so there will be two E36 with s/n XX1 through X32 BUT the last 4 digits of the HIN will be different due to the different dates.

The last 4 digits are the two variations on the date.

Thanks Mark!!! ....Great information without a doubt!!!

There IS already a hull registry started for the 32’s ...Perhaps registries for the others and where they are will hopefully follow???

Alright! This is great info. So my E25 centerboard was made in March of ‘76.

Interesting thread, but I am not convinced that the numbers match months of manufacture. My HIN# is ERY25104M73M. According to the month theory and article it would end at L for December. I never could figure out the M at the end of mine.

Interesting. Matches well to the serial numbers we have in the early 70's, but still no letter "M" in the last digit as in my HIN. Fun thread, perhaps the M stands for my specific boat being Magnificent? ;) A special and rare Magnificent edition?

  1. Manufacturer Identification Code (MIC) ERY
  2. Hull or Serial Number 25104 E25, Hull 104
  3. Model year("M") followed by a two digit year, followed by a single letter for the manufacture month. Please note that the "Model Year" changeover was assumed to have happened in August with this format, so its possible the boat was built before its model year. The month codes are as follows: M73M
