Helm pods

Salty Dog, I also have a 84 Ericson 381. I have #515 which is sistership to Christian's, the boat is moored in Corpus Christi, TX so we are also on the "3rd Coast". I have the Navpod setup with GPS and wind, depth and speed all in one cluster and really like the setup. My cabin layout is similar to Christian's execpt for the nav table setup and the galley spice cabinet. I look forward to another 381 on the Texas coast!

In reponse to Loren's request here are a few more details on the Nav station mods made by the previous owner. There is a decoritive cover to the SS post to the right of the table. I'm not really sure of its purpose except that it can open and the PO mentioned 20220421_193318.jpg20220421_193332.jpg20220421_193402.jpg20220421_193420.jpg it could be hiding place for valuables while cruising.

He had tools and wood and varnish and skills and one day he admitted to himself that he just didn't like the appearance of the vertical tube, which struck him aesthetically wrong for reasons he couldn't really explain, and life being short, or rather too long, depending on how he looked at it that day, he was going to do something about it.

Question as I am updating my Nav Pod set up and have run into some issues. Current NavPod builds have different sizing in width of the base stanchions than what my E30+ has currently installed. Has anyone run into this? I would love a bigger set up at the helm but not sure how to get there. Ideally I can just get a new housing but not sure how to remove this one in addition to where to even get a new one made.

Only photo I have without digging too much attached. This housing will not fit a new 9 inch b&g Vulcan MFD which I want.

We've all been there.

We returned a NavPod unit because it was about an inch shy of our 12.5-ish" on center guard width. If we go with a commercially available unit, we'll look into ScanStruts as they appear very adaptable to a variety of dimensions.

Molly Ann,

You'll probably need a new binnacle guard if you ditch that ancient Ericson pod. No sweat, custom guard available from any stainless tube shop such as Railmakers, neighborhood of $100.

This is a great tip and only 20 min down the road from me. Any insight on a new custom "pod" for atop the rails or does Railmakers help in area too?

I don't think they do pods. I would choose the displays first, then find a pod the right size. People really seem to like the bent rails, which display flat pods at a convenient angle to the helmsperson (message #8). My "homemade" pod is shown in message #4.

Critical to a binnacle guard with pod is "grab room" on the tubing. Several crew may be holding on to it in a seaway and there needs for be room for their hands.

I was wondering we have the same year and model. A 1984 Ericson 381. Do you know the tankage specs. I have two water tanks. One under v berth smaller. One under starboard settee larger a black tank under forward half of port settee and fuel under quarter berth. I’m guessing 50 gal or so. Any info would be very helpful. BTW I enjoyed immensly your recent Catalina sailing video. I spent many a summer day with my son at emerald bay scout camp.
We finished our Pod setup. Used a Seaview pod. Upgraded to a 1 1/4 inch pedestal guard. This is our setup.

I believe (belief being often different from fact) that my bow tank is 30 gallons and starboard bench tank is 40 gallons. But don't believe the placard, I put it there to cover a mar in the deck.

Patch 2.JPG

Also, you may have a different interior. Your table is fold-out, whereas mine was just a plate designed to lower and turn into double berth. Your banquette might be different, too. Here's mine:

I'm also guessing 50 gallons for my fuel tank under the quarterberth--although I once put 52 gallons into it. Some listings claim 55 gallons there.

Thank you Christian. I appreciate the info. I wish I had a complete manual on the boat. I have an engine manual I believe the boat was ordered from the factory with a few variations. From what I found out the original owner Was Dale Kemppainen a former Nuclear Engineer
who passed in 2019 https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/starnewsonline/name/dale-kemppainen-obituary?id=9887292
orderEd the boat when living in San Francisco with factory made alterations. Including the saloon layout with two leaf folding table and side bar and storage lockers port and starboard. See photos. One other question. Do you happen to know black tank capacity? A little harder to measure than fuel?? P.S any more YouTube’s in the works??

Good to know. Your option eliminates the bunk conversion, which would be fine by me since I don't use it anyhow.

Nice to know. Thank you. We are planning to take Salty Dog on our first offshore jaunt to Freeport stay overnight and then return, all we have done thus far are daysails on Galveston Bay. It can take 4-5 hours of favorable wind just to get from Seabrook marina out of the Galveston inlet Now we have our electronics all setup and working properly. Are you on the Ericson Facebook groups?
