remember, hin numbers were not required until sometimes in the 70s. if you have a hin it will be upper aft and the port side of the transum

Mine is on the upper starboard of the transom. So check there too.

Thank you. That's where I expected it, but the transom is blank. Have an '87 Catalina 36 and the HIN is stamped on the upper starboard of the transom. My E29 may be earlier build than before it was required. Believe the E29 production years were between about 1970 and about 1978 or 79. Believe there is a hull number somewhere but don't remember if there is an interior marking if any or where. Have had this boat on a three axle trailer in the backyard for 30 years. Time to begin some restoration or make it available to someone else that has the interest and energy to provide love and attention to boat with good bones.

my 1971 e29 was in a racing bump (prior owner) and the stern was repaired. If the HIN was there, it gone in the repair. Also the boat was never titled, but the HIN was on the New York registration

Start with the boat's title to see the year it was built. Some owners of early boats have found a hull number stamped on a metal part, like the tiller/rudderhead casting. That number will correspond with the sail number on an OEM mainsail, also.

At least one 'net info source puts the Federal HIN requirement starting November 1, 1972. A fair guess would be that hulls were "correctly" molded out with this info in stages as builders phased in compliance. Note that the original rule gave the builder some latitude in deciding what info went into part of the number/letter series, besides the obvious code for the company name and the month and year the hull was molded out.
edit: typo corrected for date......

You're correct (at least, assuming you meant 1972...)

there have been three different standards for HIN numbers: pre-1972, 1972-1984, and 1985 to present.
-- pre-1972, there was no requirement, and no standard about where (or if) the HIN would be found on the boat
-- 1972-1984, there was a requirement but no standard format
-- 1985 to present, there's a standard format and standard location (starboard-aft quarter, or top of starboard-side of transom)
