Rusted steering supports - replace or reinforce?

I am going down this path right now, I am reinforcing the starboard side with shit loads of epoxy and a couple large wedge shaped blocks made from Eucalyptus, afterwards I may glass around the hole thing / tab to the hull. Pretty sure it will be strong enough considering the existing tabbing is...

    1972 Ericson 35-II

What did the OP do about the steering sheaves? Mine are currently about to snap off as well. It's a matter of time.... The original steel plates that were tab welded onto steel straps coming out of the hull are about to give...

    E35-2 cable steering

I have 4 sheaves (pulleys) total, 2 guide sheaves attached just under the pedastal base, and 2 more turning shaves port and starboard, which are positioned to line up with the quadrant. The system has worked fine for 50 years but now the metal tabbing to the hull is rusting out and I need...

Engine - refurbish or replace ?

Just keep the fuel filters changed, keep the diesel tank clean, service the items that need attention (fuel lines, hoses, belts, etc.) and change the oil and she will run forever. Don't fix it til it's broke, or you'll be broke. A repower is a can of worms. I've got a 50 year old Albin diesel...

    35-2 Holding Tank Experience?

My 35-2 has a Raritan PHII head with 1 1/2" discharge hose going straight overboard. This situation has worked fine for casual day sailing but my name could be called any day for a liveaboard approval and I need to fit a proper holding tank. How have you all retrofitted your tanks in and what...

    Mystery Mast Bonding in E35-2

On my mast there is a common ground that serves all the lights on the mast. It's possible that somewhere inside the mast conduit, or outside the conduit if that's the case, chafe may have caused the main negative for the lights and the antenna coax ground to get together. The definite solution...

    35-2 Rudder Post Leak

Hi All, The answer is YES the grease fitting has helped A LOT. However it is not 100% fix and requires adding grease approximately every 3 sails, depending on how many amateurs are behind the wheel and steering like crazy monkeys. I really like the o-ring idea, however I think the real proper...

Best way to attach a cleat to mast?

I run the spin topping lift down to the turnbuckle of the forward starboard shroud and clip it on when at the dock to prevent din noise. Same with the spinnaker halyard, to the port side. When sailing, I move them to the ring car, when not in use. When in use, they are in use. Enjoy ;)

    35-2 Single Handing, Possible?

I would recommend the wheel pilot for ease of install, should mount right up to the Edson or Yacht Specialties pedastal. Haven't given it much thought lately because I have a Morgan 41 OI project boat now too. A friend of mine has a monitor on his E35-2, they work ok when sails are balanced...

    portlight repair gasket

1970 E35 I tried today and broke the glass while tapping the frame together with rubber hammer. WAY too much sealant in fram channel, about 1/4 bead all the way of the dow. Recommends: Lube the new gasket (Catalina 27 kit) Use very little or none Dow 975 Use butyl tape for deck seal Have big...

    portlight repair gasket

I am about to reseal some portlights today using the Catalina kit on my E35 1970. The kit comes with sikaflex and with Dow silicone. Does the silicone go between the frame/gasket? Or between the glazing/gasket? Or both? Thanks sorry for bumping old thread..

    35-2 Rudder Post Leak

I also considered leaving a hose permanently attached to the zerk - not so much for convenience, but for not having to put pressure on the zerk fitting every time I take it on and off. I finished the second round of epoxying yesterday, will document the results this afternoon.

    35-2 Rudder Post Leak

Hmm this is a little late. The flange appears to have 4 bolts on it. I tried the CW method today but made what hopefully will not be a fatal flaw. In the 35-2 the bottom of the log is below the water line. I drilled the small hole pretty low on the log and water began coming in immediately...

    35-2 Rudder Post Leak

Ah yes thank you at first I thought they were different designs but now I see that the bottom half of the stuffing box on my boat is encapsulated in fiberglass! Joy!!! This might actually work to my advantage IF I can get the top flange off perhaps I can remove the old packing and replace...

    35-2 Rudder Post Leak

Hi All, It's been a while since I posted but that's because I've been out enjoying sailing the pants off my E35 2-3x weekly. No however I have a new issue that has flooded the cabin sole several times. I just cleaned the most recent bilge flood out of the carpet and would like to keep it that...
