    Cutlass bearing

Cutlass bearing - 1981 E38 - BADE Hi Don, I have a 1981 E38, replaced mine about 8 years ago. Remember I had a hard time finding the correct size. When I did get one I saved the Box it came in since it had the part number on it, which was "BADE", so i would not forget for next time. Do not...

Bimini top, my lessons learned Hi Evan, Live down hear in South Florida with an e38 which has had a 6’ Bimini for about 7 years now. Sunbrella, aluminum frame, stainless fittings and straps. Was set up so it could be positioned forward over companion way or positioned located aft over helm...

    E 38 rudder removal

Removed my rudder a couple of years ago. My recollection is the quadrant is two parts. The main section is what is shown in the pictures. There is a small piece that attaches around the shaft with one bolt on each side, essentially clamping to the shaft. The through bolt goes the both halves...

    Mast boot/tape

3 years ago I after trying some different mast seals(tape, boots, etc) I went with the rope seal option. It has been great and has held up well to the south Florida sun and rain. Steps involved: Got a few different sizes of 3 strand nylon rope (5/8”, 3/”4, 1”) Trimmed them each about 22”...

Rebuild of diesel universal 5432 – Retorque head

After breaking in my Universal 5432 , I went and retorqued the head per the manual. Not fun since you have to remove the valve train. I found the head bolts did not move when applying the proper torque value. Just wondering what others might have found? Did find some valves out of adjustment...

    Shaft Alignment

Just went through the replacement of the coupling, shaft, stuffing box and cutlass bearing. Used feeler gauges for all alignments. It was aligned on the hard and then rechecked once in the water. There was quite a difference from land to water on alignment, but the boat had been out of the water...

    Yanmar Mixing Elbow Corrosion

While refitting my boat, I went the iron pipe route wrapped with insulation up to the water injection point. I was able to make it all up with standard parts off the local hardware store shelf. Also increased size from 1 1/2" to 2" to give better flow all the way thru the water lift muffler...

    1 5/8" Packing Box Hose

I ran into a similar issue while refitting my e38. I had no way of knowing what size the original 30 year old hose was. So I measured the stuffing box and it was 1 5/8”. So I posted the following here: “e38 - 1981 - prop shaft stuffing box hose replacement Looking for some advice on...

    m15 water temp sensor

With regard to engine blowers my only experience is with the Rule 4” in line blower, it is compact, works great and move great amount of air but is surprisingly noisy. Regards Greg s/v Spirit Soul e38

    m15 water temp sensor

Most boats use temperature gauges and senders which use a standard range of measurement. You should be able to get a temperature sender for alot less than you were quoted at a local marine supply. I will second the suggestion to locate you local kubota tractor parts dealer as it will save you...

    masthead deck light

Just installed on on my e38 HI I just installed one on me e38 along with a matching tricolor / anchor light on the top of the mast. Very happy with them. I do recommend checking the wiring inside the steaming light, new out of the box I found one wire not connected inside the housing, it...

    1983 e381

I just did this on a 1981 E38 this past spring, it needs about 2'. Typically most blocks are not blocked that high off the ground. My boat was on gravel/dirt so I dug a hole under the rudder, until I had enough clearance to lower it. Did not weigh it but I woudl guess its about 80 pounds. Most...

    Universal 5432 & M40 engine information

universal - tractor cross reference Found this table on the internet back when i was working on my engine. Not sure how accurate it is, but the M-18 would cross reference to the Z600 tractor. I can second the recommendation to contact Thomas at SouthEast Power Products Phone: (954) 979-5899...

e38 - Running backstay and innner forstay deck locations

Does anyone have experience with installing running backstays and inner forestays on an e38? I am curious about where the inner forestay deck attachement point is? Regards Greg Dettmer s/v Spirit Soul 1981 e38

Orienting a 2 speed winch for Load Direction

In my opinion, The drum converts the sheet load in to a rotational force which appears on the “gear” on the inside of the drum and is applied to the output gear of the 2/3 speed winch. The direction of sheet load would have no effect on the rotational force applied to the output gear...
