Geoff I wish I could tell you it some special varnish, but all I used was Formby's high gloss tung oil. Let it dry, very, very light sand with 240 grit, wipe down with rubbing alcohol and tack cloth. That is four coats. I experimented with a satin in an area, I think it has a little warmer...
