  1. Finding the leaks

    E23-2 Spring 2020 Phase 1 | Finding the leaks

A Chicago Spring 2020 downpour helped me put together a laundry list of how rain was getting into the interior of the boat. The first obvious suspect was the port side stantion that was attached to the deck by duct tape and wood screws. (Photo below). The other areas were all the ports except...

    Chainplate & bedding plates

Thanks everyone for your input. The bulkhead is solid since I reinforced it 2 years ago when I did all the rehab work. The decking is not soft. I'll take your advice and go with option #2. I know that opening the deck is like opening a can of worms since that's what happened when I thought that...

    Chainplate & bedding plates

I have attached a picture of the moisture reading from the portside decking near the chainplate. I have also attached a picture after removing the bedding plate. My instinct (Option 1) is to open up the decking by removing the deck skin, clear out the soaked balsa core, dry out, reglass/epoxy...
  4. Spring 2020 Phase 1

    E23-2 Spring 2020 Phase 1

Cabin interior It's Spring 2020 in Chicago. Covid has closed everything down. I'm working remotely so I have the time to work on my boat. Where to start. The marina said that the engine is in good shape since they have been taking care of it since the previous owner abandoned it in 2016. They...

E32-2 The Rehab of Fashion Show

My blog will show the rehabbing of Oasis to Fashion Show a 1974 Ericson 32. The work was begun the spring of 2020 and was completed the Spring of 2022. I will break the work done in 3 forms. The first will be pictures of the condition of the boat when I purchased in the winter (offseason) of...

How many 1974 Ericson 32 are still out there?

Hi Christian, Yes I would definitely do it again if I was younger. It was during Covid shutdown, so I had time since I was working remote ( I'm now retired) and no one was at the boat yard. Since it was during Covid, getting supplies took much longer than probably usual. As my friends have said...

How many 1974 Ericson 32 are still out there?

Great welcome to the club! I spent 2 years rehabbing mine. I'm not an expert but if you need any information regarding where to get materials, etc. let me know. I have attached before and after pictures.

How many 1974 Ericson 32 are still out there?

If I'm not mistaken, my Ericson 32 turns 50 years old this month. I saved her from destruction in 2019. She was abandoned and the marina was going to part her for the lead in the keel and parts. I was wondering how many other 1974's are still out there. Let me know.

    E32-2 restoration thread

I used the Total Boat Wet Edge on my deck in 2022. It was easy to use. Put 2 coats of the Total Boat primer on, 1 coat of Wet Edge. While the Wet Edge was still wet, I spread a layer Soft Sand Coarse grit over the area. Once dried, less than 24 hours, I applied 2 coats of Wet Edge as the finish...

    How far is too far?

I have to say that I'm very lucky to live where I do. My commute to my boat is 15 minutes by car, 25 minutes by bike (which we do 2-3 times a week). I'm at one of Chicago's 10 public marinas. A great city with great access to sailing no matter what others who don't live here say!! :egrin:
