    Shakedown Cruise

The electrical problem is interesting, since the lights were on then they must be a suspect. Perhaps a chafed wire in the pulpit. I seriously doubt whether enough current could flow through this to make the anchor chain warm. Do you have a windlass?

downwind in a E32-200 1990 in Sf Bay

In general single reef at 13 (occasional whitecaps) with 50% jib and double reef at 16 (frequent whitecaps) with 30% jib. Anything else is just a waste of canvas and makes for too much lean. Downwind ease out a little more headsail. Double reefing as the PO suggested is a good idea as the wind...

Survey: E35-3 Propane Control Panel Location

Control Panel and Locker Snaps of the control panel and propane locker. The locker is pretty crowded and one could cap off the pressure gauge, it is not a reliable indicator of what a tank should be changed.

    Fire extinguisher and flare life

I have dutifully replaced flares and cartridges when expired but I have not found a good way of disposing of the old ones. The big orange canister is now full of the most recent ones. I did manage to dispose of some ancient cartridges by cutting them up but the newer cartridges have a tougher...

Survey: E35-3 Propane Control Panel Location

The solenoid switch / sensor panel is in the location Christian indicated above the tilt out door. A little annoying as this would be a good position for the wheel-pilot sensor. The propane sensor is a small puck underneath the stove.

    Stereo recommendations?

I do not like to listen to the radio when sailing because I'm too deaf to cope with the background noise, radio and talking to guests. For those delightful evening dinners on the boat we do have a Bose SoundMini speaker with tunes provided from the iphone. Since the radio reception varies with...

    Speed Log

Your point is well taken, with a couple of iphones, ipads and a Garmin Montana GPS we have no shortage of SoG readings. I still like to know the difference between the two to explore the difference in current in different parts of the bay.

    Speed Log

I have a Raymarine magnetic spinning wheel speed log, a quick sail a week is usually enough to free it up. Occasionally I have to remove it and persuade the small crustaceans attached that they need to find a new home. It is always exciting to watch a gallon of water a second pour in while I...

Ericson 35-3 Cockpit Drain Hardware - Replacement screen available?

I don't think you are entering into the full spirit of this Christian. In the words of S.R. Hadden, why build one when you can build two at twice the price. Damn the torpedoes and make them out of gold plated titanium.

Oil consumption and running a diesel hard enough

My understanding is that a 160 thermostat will start to open at 160 but will not be fully open until 15 degrees higher. This would put you at a near optimal range with the thermostat fully open. To go to a higher temperature thermostat would risk operating at the top end of the range (170-190)...

    V Berth cushions

    From a local shop?

    V Berth cushions

What did you replace them with? I have an 87 E35-3 and would be happy to hear about something that replaces the roll towards the middle cushions.

    Gybe question

Sorry but I am having a hard time visualizing this (perhaps the product of a right brain). I think what you are suggesting is oversteering through the gybe to the sail is luffing by the time it reaches it full swing, then correcting back to the desired direction. Perhaps a picture would help.

e38 200 Mast height from top of deck / main halyard length

In a recent halyard replacement the rigger recommended adding enough length to allow the halyard to be used for hauling someone out of the water. Fortunately I have not used it for this purpose but I have used the main halyard to help get the dingy up the companionway.

    E381 Bow Pulpit Needed

Sorry, I do not have a pulpit to offer, but a recent incident involving reversing and a bridge has taught me that local welders can do a very nice job recreating the rails. If you do go that route remember to ask them make an internal route for wiring for the bow lights. Hopefully the mounts on...
