Hi Tom,
I'm definitely not an expert but have been studying sail trim and playing with it a bunch over the past few months. Corrections welcome if I've giving bad advice. Here's what I think I understand:
In general (but not absolutely), its better to have a flatter main in heavier wind. A...
Easy install for the Dometic 975. Seems solid but I have yet to take it for a "test drive". Perfectly sized. Another drawback of the old raritan was that the bowl was so close to the door that it was hard to sit down and close the door. Without all the pumping apparatus I was able to move the...
I know for a fact that one person full of adrenaline can use a hatch cover to do the same on a J/24...one of my mercifully few "moments of sheer terror". Had the wind die on me in the channel in Charleston Harbor right as a freighter came around the corner. No auxiliary engine on that boat so...
Hey Evan-
So first of all these are California Halibut--you would have been getting Pacific Halibut in AK. These are smaller, but just as delicious. Technique is similar, jig or troll over flat, sand or mud bottoms. Tackle shop would have better advice on gear but I know folks that go after them...
It looks like the HEET is almost pure Methanol. This is good to know as a backup, but since it's marketed as an injector cleaner some of the additives that aren't disclosed could be of concern. Apparently backpackers love the stuff but I'm more concerned about fumes cooking in the boat vs. out...
Cool, I'm at 14th/Lake. I hear you about Nextdoor. It seems to be the same people having the same 3-4 arguments over and over again but it's hard to look away!
I recognize a few of those boats; good to know to give them a wide birth. I would hardly consider a 35 footer a "pocket cruiser" but that's neither here nor there.
Tom, any chance you live in the Richmond District? Thought I saw your name Nextdoor a few weeks ago.
The boats that make me sweat when I see them coming are the newer 35-45' Beneteaus and Jeanneaus. I see them ramming docks, healed over at absurd angles flying all their canvas in 25 kts of wind, crossing directly in front of ships, and generally creating chaos pretty regularly. I have a theory...
I was just there yesterday! Yep slips available for $15. The one thing I'd look out for that isn't obvious is that a pretty significant counter-clockwise eddy sets up in the cove on an ebbing tide. Nothing that can't be dealt with, but it can be an entertaining spot to watch people come and go...
That seems like the ticket. Am I right in understanding that I will be able to use a pump out to empty it? That would really be ideal for me because the pump out in my marina is just across from my slip.
