    Decision time...

Decision made. Thanks to this great group! After much deliberation, yesterday we completed a sea trial on the '74 C&C 35 which we have agreed to purchase; all went well. While we are excited to begin this adventure (finally), I still find myself checking out every Ericson I see, so it is quite...

    Close hauled in an Ericson

Great thread, thanks! What a great thread! Even if we don't end up with an Ericson for now, I may just have to lurk here for great info like this.

    Sailboatdata.com error re: C&C 34 designer

Sailboatdata just made the change based on my email (which of course just proves that you can't rely on their data! :) Wikipedia got their data from Sailboatdata... Rob Ball has confirmed that the 34 was a C&C design, and that Bruce King did not design any of the C&Cs. And he owns a 34. I...

    Sailboatdata.com error re: C&C 34 designer

Recently, someone on the EYO forums mentioned to me that the C&C 34, being a Bruce King design, might be one I should keep an eye out for, and there was actually one for sale near Seattle I believe. I recently learned that the attribution of Bruce King as the designer for the C&C 34 (1977, not...

    Decision time...

This is another area where the C&C 35-2 is different - it uses a semi-balanced high aspect ratio rudder unlike the Mk 1 (and some Mk 1s were retro-fitted with it), no coring in the hull, and a LWL of over 30', which was unheard of in '73 for a 35' boat; most 38s were barely 30'. It was also one...

    Decision time...

Yes, but there is a wealth of information on the C&C list, similar to this forum (although not nearly as easy to navigate being an old school mailing list!), and with Rob Ball, a past C&C designer as a member, most questions are quickly answered. With C&Cs outnumbering Ericsons by at least 4 to...

    Decision time...

Thanks for the feedback. For a while, I was convinced that encapsulated keels were the answer, but discovering that Ericson made the switch with the later boats, along with spending some time on the C&C list convinced me otherwise. I have spoken with several long term C&C owners who have no...

    Decision time...

Yes, this was a concern for me also, and one reason why the 30 and 35-1/2 are on my list, as they do not have cored hulls. IIRC, all the boats below 35 use solid hulls; the 35-3 is cored, but the mk 1 and 2 are not. The Niagaras are also cored, and every one I've seen has seen extensive offshore...

    Decision time...

Thanks for the comments; this confirms some of my thinking also. I've been using the PHRF ratings, and also comparing specs of similar boats with the online calculator to get an idea of how they might perform, or what kind of interior space they will have. The C&C 35 is an exceptional boat, and...

Best kayaks for cruising, and sailing dinghies

Boarding a kayak... I agree that boarding from a boat is a challenge, but these will be to supplement a dinghy, not replace one. I got a fair bit of practice with kayak boarding last summer, as my brother uses one of his old whitewater kayaks (not very stable!) as a tender to reach his aluminum...

    Decision time...

Thanks, the boat does look very good in the photos, so it might make the choice easy if we get a good feel from it. The owner was only thinking of selling, but after I spoke to him, he let me know that he'd reduce the price if I were interested in moving ahead soon. Not sure if they are getting...

    Decision time...

At this point, every response is of help, even if it is to just make me re-think things (although I've been doing a lot of that than I'd like lately...) I get your point about nearly everything needing replacement, which is why I've considered carefully any boat in the 20K+ price range, only...

2019 PNW Anacortes – Participant Sign Up

Listing in Pacific Yachting? I've been reading through old issues of Pacific Yachting and Good Old Boat from the library, and noticed the December 2018 issue of PY lists many rendezvous for Bene, C&C, Catalina, CS, etc. but Ericson is missing. There are photos and writeups from each event, so...

Best kayaks for cruising, and sailing dinghies

Got a Pelican 10' I found a used Pelican 10' kayak with paddle and spray skirt for $300, so we'll see how it works on the yet to be found boat. My first outing across Cowichan Bay to Genoa Bay and back proved it is a solid boat, as I was paddling across 15kn winds and 2' chop on the way back...
