E-38 Anchor Locker Upgrade

Dan, this may seem like a personal question, but which way does your windlass motor hang. Can't see it from photos or am I missing something?

It's a horizontal windlass, so the motor is inside the port side of the casing, above deck. It doesn't hang below the gypsy/capstan like the motor on a vertical windlass. Much easier to install, which is the advantage of a horizontal unit. The disadvantage is that the chain gypsy can only engage the chain around a 90 degree radius, while the vertical ones engage about 180 degrees...a much more secure bite.

Thanks for your quick reply Dan. That's why I couldn't see the motor!

I got a deal on a Maxwell RC8-8 vertical. I will have to work out the motor position under the deck, and how far back I will have to come to get the room.

But first things first. I will be working to take out the factory original "shallow anchor pan" over the next couple weekends by cutting it out as you did. How difficult is it to remove the leftover pan RIM after I cut it and take out the million screws? Is it 5200'd onto the flange or was it easier than that?

I guess the real question his how many chisels and heat guns should I pack in the truck?

Doug,
Don't try to remove the rim after cutting out the pan. I simply left it in place. It's doing no harm, and interfering with nothing. Sand the cut edges & let it alone. Good news, yes?

I second the 'leave the rim in place' idea. I removed mine, along with the whole tray, but then I had to build up that rim area so the lid would lie ~level with the surrounding deck, instead of ~3/16 too low. Building it back up was a hassle.

Thanks for the insightful replies. Good news indeed. I think leaving the rim in as part of reinforcement is an excellent idea. I never thought of the hatch being too low Neil. Thank you both for saving me from pain. Now I am wondering if I should screw and epoxy a little 1" x 1" (or something like that) section of G-10 around the opening underneath to simulate the rigidity that was once provided by the missing pan. What do you think Dan? I know you got a lot of use from your re-design. Was it wobbly or pretty rigid without the pan? I apologize for all the questions, but I have been forced into thinking mode by a return of Winter all of a sudden!

I didn't reinforce mine at all, and I've never noticed any loss of rigidity. I don't believe the pan ever afforded any.
