E38 Mast Damage

I think tomorrow I'll go up the mast again and see if I can remove the stainless steel plate to get a better look at what lurks beneath.

Thanks for the feedback. If I find that it needs some attention, I will pull the mast and make the repairs.

I just thought of a possible obstacle to the plan to remove your cover. On mine the axle for the three sheaves went through holes in the SS cover. The cover extended back into the masthead and protected the aluminum from the spinning sheaves. I can't be sure on your configuration but it is a possibility to be aware of. You may be able to tell once you get up there and can shine a flashlight on the inside of the outboard sheave(s). This is the best shot I can find of the cover and its extent. You can see the axle in its hole and the edge of the axle/hole in the SS cover. It also made it a little tougher to get it all back together. Let us know how it goes and good luck!

Yes I believe mine is the same way. I think the issue will be the that the axle may be frozen inside the mast sheaves or where it passes through the mast. I think the axle only goes in from one side so it will be tough to knock it out because I wont be able to access it from both sides. I guess we'll see here in a few hours....waiting for the fog to lift.
