Buffer woes

I’ve been trying my hand at buffing my hull. Using finesse it as hull is in decent shape. But I find the Makita buffer sticking and jumping, hard to control. What might I be doing wrong? I’ve tried more and less material. Higher, lower speeds. (And not a wuss so don’t go there lol). Trying to get my boat out of the yard before this quarantine causes me to be paying for my boat to be housed in two locations at once. Thanks.

Probably countless variables, but having just finished polishing my hull I can tell you that with the direct drive rotary beast I was using it would chatter if the pad wasn't flat on the surface, or when I wasn't pushing hard enough.

I did a social humor piece I called Boat Hot Yoga on the experience... did lose a few lbs.

The lowest speed on my buffer is 1000 rpm and I use that.

I haven't buffed recently, but seem to remember that you have to hold the pad at a slight angle to the surface instead of flat. I don't pretend to know much about technique, but that seems to work.

Also FWIW I use the 3M wool polishing pad as my primary.

Agree, you buff with the outer edges of the pad - about a third of the diameter. Don't put the pad flat against the hull.

Try spraying the hull with a slight amount of water then buff. I have a spray bottle on mu hip when I do thisy Continue buffing until the water disappears and the compound becomes chalky. Continue buffing until the chalkiness disappears then you will have a shiny hull ready for waxing.
