Wing Nut Question from a Wing Nut

One of the wing nuts on my raw water strainer cap has gone missing. Should I be concerned about what material the replacement is cast from? Will I be an outcast for asking such a basic question?

Yes you will be. Sail north, enjoy your new home in the Great White North! :)
Was there a run on wing nuts along with toilet paper and instant yeast in your area?
On a serious note, I don't think it would matter. Mostly because you are in fresh water. I'd probably seek out an identical wing nut to the non-escaped wing nut when your chandlery or hardware store is restocked.

Well actually, I try to avoid the joining of dissimilar metals as it almost always results in corrosion, I believe due to galvanic reaction which occurs regardless of water salinity tho salty = faster.

I know of one boat personally that sunk at the dock due to a failed raw water engine strainer assembly. So treat repairs like you would a underwater fitting, shying away from plastic. bigd14 SS wing nut with tef-gel would likely last quite a while. tef-gel has many uses, but is expensive for just one use, so tef-gel is good to have around anyway. The strainer is likely a perko model, which they sell nuts and washers for, if you can determine the model. here is a link to a likely model, as a start:

Happy ending: once the cover came off there was enough light below for me to find the wing nut in the bilge. Aylwin will splash on Thursday. Marinas open Friday in Vermont. Wash your hands and no raft ups!
