34-2 Campbell Prop owners - verification of West North manuf sizing?

I have received a quote from West by North on a new 3 blade campbell sailer propeller for my Ericson 34-2 (25XP engine) and compared to what I currently have 2 blade 15 x 11P, his selection of a CS is quite a bit smaller. Also I reviewed several of the previous threads associated to this topic had a CS prop sizing of 14 x 8p vs below, 13x9.

If someone can provide some input on the performance of their CS prop on a 34-2 or 35-3 25XP engine based on a 14x8 vs 13x9 or whatever you end up using, that would be great. I also read that CS selections may be a slight undersize at times so I just want you input to be sure.
Thanks!

For reference, I have attached his selection and reasoning:

Hi Patrick,

Thank you for your continued interest in the Campbell Sailer Propeller.

We typically go with a 3 blade RH 13x9 for the Universal M-25XP @ 2.05. This prop will allow the engine to achieve full rpm and deliver cruise around 2400-2600rpm. We sometimes go with 14x8 for guys who are looking to maximize cruising speed at a lower rpm. The trade off here is the engine may struggle to turn the prop at higher power settings.

We recently went with a 3 blade 13x9 for a Catalina 34 (similar size boat). Owner indicates 6.5kts cruising at 2600-2700rpm and can achieve full engine rpm.

Pricing on a 3 blade RH 13x9 is USD $590.00. Freight via DHL Express (3-4 business days) is $42.00. I can get this out the door for Wednesday next week.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Best,
Kelsey

I also posted the same question here back in March and came up dry. Looks like you got a bit more info that I did. Can't seem to find any negative info on their props anywhere, but I would sure like to hear from someone who has put one on a 34-2.
Below is the email I received from West by North.

Hi John,

Thank you for your interest in the Campbell Sailer propeller.

This recommendation assumes the Ericson 34-2 / Universal M-25XP @ 2.05 / 1.0" SAE Taper.

Based on this I would suggest a 3 blade RH 14.0" diameter x 8.0" pitch (14x8). This size is recommended to give you a good cruising rpm and still have reserve for head wind and seas.

The Campbell Sailer has cupped blades and a leading edge foil. This produces greater thrust and reduces the slip rate. To account for this we often size smaller than other manufacturers for a given installation.

The Campbell Sailer offers the perfect balance between powering, maneuvering and low drag performance. It's the lowest drag fixed 3 blade on the market. Up to 35-40% less drag when compared to equivalent size units from other manufacturers. The Campbell prop is renown for how smooth it runs throughout the entire RPM range.

Pricing is USD $655.00. Freight via DHL Express (3-4 business days) is $46.00. Manufacturing time is approximately 10-15 business days on order.

We accept checks by mail, or credit card via telephone. We can also send you a link to complete payment through PayPal. This is a convenient and secure method to complete credit card payment. PayPal account not required and no additional fees apply.

We would be happy to discuss this recommendation in further detail or answer any questions you may have.

Smooth sailing,
Kelsey

John,

I'm headed down the path of replacing my prop and was leaning towards Campbell Sailer as well. I haven't heard back from them yet, but I was wondering if you ended up with one of their props? I have a Yanmar 3YM20 with a 2.21 reduction, so may be different, but still curious what your experience was.

Thanks,

Nick

Minutes after posting I received an email from West by North. I've heard how good they are at sizing props and to trust them, but 13x7.5 seems really small. so I'll throw the recommendation I got on the pile for another point of comparison and hope for advise from those who have going down this path:

Nick,

Thank you for your interest in the Campbell Sailer propeller.

I agree. Replacing the prop should be your first step in solving the vibration issue. As the 2 blade prop was carried over from the previous engine & transmission I would suggest its oversized for the new setup. The engine is struggling to turn the prop at higher power settings resulting in cavitation. The fact the prop is chipped can also be a contributing factor. Also 2 blade props don't run as smooth a 3 blade units even when sized correctly.

The Campbell Sailer is renown for how smooth it runs over the entire RPM range. Owners often reduce or eliminate vibration problems by installing a 3 blade Campbell prop.

For your setup I would suggest a 3 blade RH 13.0" diameter x 7.5" pitch (13x7.5).

Pricing is USD $585.00. Freight via DHL Express (3-4 business days) is $48.00. Manufacturing time is approximately 8-10 business days on order.

The 3YM20 can have a transmission ratio of 2.21 or 2.62. The 2.21 ratio delivers a higher shaft RPM. This produces less torque for the same HP when compared to the 2.62 ratio. As a result a smaller prop is required. Considering the size of the boat a larger diameter would offer improved manoeuvring and control but if we go any bigger the engine will struggle to turn the prop. You have a theoretical hull speed of around 7.2kts but your are under-powered to achieve this speed. With 20hp available i would suggest you can achieve approximately 6.5kts at max and a little less at cruise.

We would be happy to discuss this recommendation in further detail or answer any questions you may have.

Smooth sailing,
Kelsey

At this time I am still running my old two blade. Since putting my engine on four mounts most of my vibration issues have been abated. I am really tempted to go with CS prop but decided that I needed a new auto pilot more than I needed the prop.

For some reason I thought that the E-34-2 and E-35-3 would commonly take a 15" prop.
Any owners want to chime in? Class? Bueller?!

I have an entirely different boat from you with a MUCH smaller engine (Yanmar 1GM). But I can tell you that their tech support is excellent, and I'd trust Kelsey's expert opinion on this. He is super thorough, has a ton of experience, knows his own product inside and out, and will be happy to consult with you on the phone if you want to discuss any of your concerns.

They do pitch their props differently from a conventional prop. The performance under power is quite good and they have much less drag than a conventional 3-blade. Here is an excellent review of the prop that I'd suggest you consult.

I ended up pulling the trigger on the Campbell Sailor. I called Kelsey and discussed the prop. He revised his recommendation to a 13 x 8 based on my 20 hp motor being undersized for the boat and the 2.21 transmission keeping the prop shaft RPMs high. The thing looks tiny next to the old 15" two blade, but I'm optimistic based on all the positive reviews and Kelsey's support.

I called a local diver (Chris the Diver) on Friday and it was installed by Saturday afternoon. We're planning on cruising next week, so fingers crossed it fixes some of the vibration and performs well. I'll follow up after the trip.

First time out with the new prop was a success! All the vibration is gone, we cruised at 2700 rpm / 6.2 knots, maxed out at 6.6 at full 3600 rpm. Even had an hour or so on a perfect beam reach pushing 7.2 so there can't be too much drag. I couldn't be happier with my first impression.

So glad to hear this! I've been really satisfied with my Campbell Sailer prop also. Good performance and apparently low drag. Sounds like they got the sizing perfect based for you on the numbers you are seeing.
