Sail cover color choices + logo

The installation of the Tides mast track requires a new sail cover to be made due to the significant height difference of the flaked sail . The old cover was pretty worn out anyway .

I’m playing around with color choices in photoshop by recoloring a photo of the temporary cover color using HSV values from sunbrella swatches .

It’s not easy to match the hull - lighting and materials are different, but so far the darker blues are a possibility ( see photos attached ). The wacky "purple" is not a serious choice. I just threw that one in.

Another option is to go with a contrasting color like light silver . I’m wondering if darker colors may hold up better ? But perhaps they trap more heat ? Does anyone have any Interesting color combinations on their boat ?

I have also asked the cover maker for an estimate to stencil the Ericson “Viking” logo on the side (s) . Do we have graphics available? I’m not sure about this one , but pondering it .

Edit: I was able to find one logo .jpg here:

The helmet logo is also available in the PNG format - and can converted over to CAD if necessary. Check your cover guy's requirements (file format, preferred vector or raster) and let me know - we can get it sorted out one way or the other. If you can, you would want to get it actually sewn into your cover so it lasts. Of course, that's more expensive, but I digress....

Color is to your taste. I've never been a fan of Royal Blue but prefer the darker Imperial Blue - which is closer to a navy (I think it fades better). You'll want to coordinate your other canvas - and your hull - with it ultimately - I see your rail covers are a bit lighter...

Very pretty boat! :egrin:

The quote for the cover (without graphics) it 750.00 so I don't want to spend too much more :) the E-33 has a 14' boom (fractional rigging and large mainsail in proportion to sail area). Thank you for the complement on the boat. The hull paint was oxidizing and I recently had a local detailer polish/wax the hull and deck. He did a great job. I probably should have waited to do this because I am working on the boat quite a bit and frequently getting it dirty (and now full of sanding dust), but psychologically it is nice to walk up to a clean boat from a pride of ownership perspective. I'll probably do it again next year.

Times change.... I used to know a local sailmaker who always put the "class emblem" on any main cover at zero or minimum cost. He felt that it was the proper way to show pride, and wanted to encourage owners to have it. (Same opinion about putting the emblem on a main sail...)
:egrin:
Way back when I was an agent for UK, the loft charged very little for the emblem. Numbers were priced 'each', but still only a tiny part of the total cost. Same philosophy, too.

I mostly only see emblems on J/Boats these days (which is where I got the idea). I am not sure if the price of the cover is high or low..It could be he has to charge me more because it adds to his cost. Also have to take into consideration the "bay area tax". Everything up here is more expensive (including used boats).

The have left the final decision of the "viking" emblem with my daughter's boyfriend who is from Minnesota :).

I have Sunbrella Silver for all exterior canvas. I like the way it looks, but of course it's hard to keep clean.

A more practical choice to avoid the popular darker colors might be Cadet grey.

Yes, I like the Sunbrella silver as well. the only consideration for me was keeping it clean. I couldn't find a dark hull Ericson with silver photo, but is your cover like this ? (warning: non-ericson content attached. Please forgive.). I think this combo looks good and would look good with the ericson logo.

When I bought a Fairclough winter cover a few years ago it was available in blue or gray. I wanted blue to match the boat, but then I considered how unattractive it might look with when streaked with white/grayish bird poop all over it. Gray hides those stains pretty well.

No, no, fingers need to go one step south on the keyboard...trying again...

This is Sunbrella Silver in the real world. The dark boat may have white--some lunatics do white, it looks pure and defiant.

I’m kinda partial to sunbrella royal blue tweed. You have to find the color to suit your taste, though.

I did about 10 photoshop images in various hues of blue and showed them to the "admiral" for final approval and instead she prefers silver (with a dark blue "Ericson" logo). 'mmm

I’ve been seeing lots of photos of blue-hulled boats with khaki canvas - looks pretty sharp to me. But changing one piece at a time could end up looking kind of motley.

I agree but I only have the small canvas covers on the handrails (I have a tiller which I'll probably make a cover for after I varnish it). We used to be a member on Beneteau 38.1 that had canvas on -everything- including all the winches. I'm not planning to do that although hatch replacement is somewhere down on the list and if I got new hatches, I would probably want to put covers on those (2).

Sail cover completed finally . I am very happy with the workmanship . This guy does really good work. The twist snaps are double riveted . The leading edge is zippered . The logo is dyed into the fabric. I went with the sunbrella silver as it contrast well with the blue hull.

Cool. I guess they made a big stencil. One thing that works well for designs on Sunbrella is exterior latex paint, which is quite flexible and long-lasting, and can be applied DIY with a brush. It would be good to know how the sailmakers do it and achieve a sharp edge. Possibly airbrush.
