Bilge pump design intent

1988 Ericson 28-2. Anyone know the original design for the electric bilge pumps? The manual doesn't say, it just says "electric pumps".
Mine has two. One for the bilge and one for the sump from the shower. The electric pump for the latter is missing but can see the hose ends and filter and wiring where it was and is the same location and set up as for the bilge pump. It is an impeller pump located under the quarter berth next to the engine approx half between intake in bilge and exit out of the stern. I am wondering if that is the design intent or they were originally submersible pumps located in the bilge and sump.

Hmmm.... on our '88 boat (different model...) they installed two of the expensive Jabsco electric pumps remotely, with strum box intakes in two places in the bilge and each with a separate float switch. Two transom outlets, also.
That, along with the "category one" $$$ manual bilge pump adjacent to the helm, provides a pretty good dewatering system, better than almost any other production boat.
Augmented, of course, by the traditional "scared person with a bucket"... !
:)

That sounds exactly the same as mine.
The reason I doubt it is original is there is wiring for the shower sump pump in the sump. There is a switch and fuse for it in the head.

On Danu (1990 28) they are installed the same as Loren’s boat. Strum boxes and float switches installed in the bilges (main and shower) and two filters and diaphragm bilge pumps located beneath an access panel in the quarter berth. Interesting timing for your post as just earlier today I started the process of rebuilding the manual bilge pump near the helm - two hours of contortions and gymnastics resulted in five of six screws being removed. This is going to be one of “those” projects.

Yes, I have to do that too. I took a look at it and don't see how it's going to come out.

We're the Jabscos diaphragm or impeller pumps?

This pump is similar to the two that were factory installed in the 1990 28: https://www.defender.com/product.jsp?id=2041398.
That's the stock pump in our '88. To answer Stuart's question, those are diaphragm pumps. That's why they do not back-flood by syphoning.
Of some interest to Bill, here are some pix of the bilge hoses and strum's in our (different shape) bilge.

Thanks @Loren Beach! Want to come to Chicago and help me get that darn pump out?

Um, probably not. Masking up to take a long risky airplane ride nowadays is a 'non starter' of an idea for us.
We'd love to visit your area and sail, tho. :)
Note that site member and commenter on that entry "Grizz" is a neighbor of yours, tho.... !
Bilge work is always "challenging" so you might need more than one bottle of scotch, really good $$ scotch, to temp him, tho... :)
