E27 Surprise in the cockpit drain

Bepi

E27 Roxanne
Recently I replaced the throttle cables for my outboard and it involved me removing the stern panel at the back of the quarter berth. While poking around I noticed that the cockpit drain has a 4 to 5 inch piece of plastic hose connecting it to the outflow under the stern. Part of me thinks this should be solid state but the other part of me recognizes that they put two pieces together to make my boat and perhaps they thought something solid state might crack. However if you own an e27 it's something you definitely want to inspect because the failure of that drain pipe would be disastrous.

Yes, that is a weak spot. On mine the hose was fine, but the bottom fitting was loose and letting water in. I glassed in a fiberglass tube. There is not a lot of flex in that spot being so close to the stern, so solid is the way to go.

My E 28+ has a similar setup. I replaced the corrugated plastic hose with a molded rubber 90 degree hose from Gates. Their picture/diagram search online is a great resource ... went to the auto parts store with the part number that looked like a good fit and just had to cut about 1 inch off the length to fit the task. This drains well, allows some movement, resists cracking if ice forms in it and is easy to emplace and replace.
