Clutches to big?

When I started my refit 3yrs back I went a bit rigging mad and bought everything ..
Now! On opening I think these Spinlock clutches are larger than I need. They are going on a 74 E 32-2.
I purchased the XTS 0814/4. And now think I should have gone with the XAS. Any thoughts.??
Just seems these should be on a larger boat..
#1-just placed on deck. #2-placed next to an XAS/3..

Oh my. From commentary on the site, you can either 'thicken" the halyard tails with a stitched on cover overlay, or just replace your clutches with ones that fit your line diameter. When replacing our ancient OEM clutches, I checked the line-holding minimums first and (luckily) my Lewmar's do hold our low-stretch 5/16 halyards.

Good luck!

You can buy different jaws for the XTS clutches to accommodate different sizes they aren't cheap though. The XTS clutches are nicer since they can't be inadvertently released by a snagged line. If the lines are newer and have a little play in the cover you just pull some small dyneema thru the core to fatten them up that's the cheapest route, I'm not sure how well a cover pulled over the outside would hold on a loaded halyard unless you put a bunch of stitching thru it(not visually pleasing).

We have used the cover technique for our highly loaded main halyard for a very heavy E38-200 mainsail. Some online sailing stores sell line with a very abrasion resistant cover that works well for this purpose.
However, applying the cover is a bit laborious and time consuming. One must free many strands at both ends of the cover section and weave them into the underlying rope individually using a needle. It is aesthetically pleasing and functional once complete. Ours has worked well without ever slipping in the clutch for many years.
