E26 Built in the 1970's?

My husband and I are looking at two different E26's in our area (Santa Barbara/Ventura, CA). They are both built in the early 70's, according to their current owners -- one in '71 ($3500) and one in '72 ($8,000). We have been looking for more info on them but have come up short. According to the NADA guide, the 26's weren't even built until the 1980's. Does anyone have any thoughts or insight into these boats? Any help you could give us would be much appreciated as the owners both seem to not know much. We are looking for a trailerable boat with less than 6500 displacement. Thanks in advance for your help!

NADA is mostly to totally unreliable for pricing an older low-production-number sailboat. :(

When an early model 26 comes on the market around here it's likely to be under 5K. Sometimes well under.

Here is a link with a picture of the first Ericson 26 model.

The "Ericson 26-2" was, AFAIK, a re-badging of the late 70's Ericson 25+. It's a far larger and more capable boat. It kinda of replaced the venerable E-27, from the 1970's, that they built so many of.

So the information about the year of the 26 you are looking at is puzzling.

Here's a blog with some pix of that model.

Do you have some photos?

As to trailerable Ericson's, an excellent choice would be the 70's Ericson 25 with the swing keel. There are a lot of posts about that model on this site.

Thanks so much for the reply! Here are the links to the two boats we are looking at:

[only let's me link to all the boats and the Ericson is listed]

We would love to get into a E25 or E25+ but have not found any in our area.

The one at the brokerage is mislabeled and looks like an Ericson 27. That is a much larger boat than your second listing which is indeed an older Ericson 26-1 (the one designed by Wm Crealock).

I am not sure how you would plan to trailer either of these keel boats on any regular basis.
Easy enough to do with slings or travelift, but ramp launching and retrieving would be a challenge.
My .02 worth and YMMV.

Welcome Saltysails,

The $3500 boat looks like an Ericson 26 (mk1) a Crealock design and the $8000 boat looks like an Ericson 27. I think they would both be a handful to Trailer regularly.

Whoops Loren beat me to it :)

Thanks, Mark and Loren, for all the help! We are actually planning on putting the boat on a trailer and storing it in dry dock and they will use a hoist to put in and out of the water. It has to be under 6500 lbs though, so that's why we were looking at a 25 or 26. Any thoughts on the Crealock design? We had heard good things about the Bruce King 26 but again there does not seem to be much out there...

Essentially, you are right. The hulls are identical. The only real modification of which I'm aware is that the forward end of the coach roof on the 26-2 (and later) is more sloped compared to the 25+. Of course, there were various engine and keel configurations possible, but that's the only specific change made to the boat itself, as far as I know. All the other specs, such as rig, displacement, beam, etc. etc. are the same.
