E27 exhaust loop

My 1976 E27 has an Atomic 4 with an upward loop (galvanized) in the exhaust line at the thruhull in the stern. Any Ericson owners out there have the same setup? I spoke with Don Moyer and he didn't recall any boats using the A4 with this. The reason for asking is I have some restriction preventing a continous exhaust flow at cruising speeds. The engine and muffler have been cleaned so the possibility exist if the loop is an after factory add on it could be causing some restriction.

by now not many of the e27 exhausts are in the original set up anymore. mine is in a Z configuration with a long hose going to the thru hull. Unfortunately the water inlet in in the upward leg of the Z which dumps water right in the engine during startup. Needless to say changing this is #1 priority.
