Engine controls on Universal M30 diesel

Our boat has the a throttle shutdown system which works like this. To shut down the engine, you pull the throttle back past a very slight detent and it shuts of the fuel flow. Both of our previous sailboats, had a conventional throttle (i.e., all the way back is idle) with a separate shutdown cable. I would like to modify ours to that design, has anyone done that, and was it difficult/expensive???

Reason for the desired change is the need for rapid shifting and adjusting while docking and leaving tight spots. I worry that I might inadvertently shut the engine down while closing the throttle quickly to change gears.

thanks for any responses on such an odd question.

Have you considered leaving it as is, which works very well for most of us, and just taking some time to get used to this way of shutting it down?
There are usually enough things that really do need fixing on a boat, without having to change things that work just fine. Just my opinion...

Check to see if there isn't an adjustment screw, or an adjustable stop-screw that limits the movement of the engine throttle linkage in that direction.
