Engine Identification, Universal 5432 vs. M40

Brian Ross and I were trying to figure this out in another thread. Question is: can you tell a Universal M40 engine at a glance, compared to a Universal 5432?

Is it possible the different casings on the face is a giveaway?

Identification is complicated by the fact that some M40s were built on the Kubota V1501 block, like the 5432, but apparently some M40s were also built on the Kubota V1502.

It would be nice for owners of these popular 32-horse diesels to be able to know what engine they have -- and what the difference is.

This one advertised as "Universal 32-horsepower 4 cylinder diesel:

Wait - per this listing it probably is an M40. That uses the Kubota V1501 which has that bolt-on cover on the front:

Thanks.

I'm going to conclude that there is no effective difference in performance between 5432 and M40. The Kubota engine block used, whether V1501 or V1502, is stamped on the block, and necessary to know for parts. (Different oil pan, for instance). And of course the M40 is younger.

Correct the conclusion if it's incorrect.

So according to that site, and bridging it with the universal engine data from Westerbeke, I think we can determine that:
5432:
• Early versions have the Kubota V1501 block, later versions may have the V1502 block
• If V1501, has imperial thread for oil filter (#299584)
• If V1501, has small water pump with water passage internal to engine front cover.
• Made from 1978-1982

M40:
• Has the Kubota V1502 block
• Has DIFFERENT imperial thread oil filter (#299927)
• Has a water pump which incorporates the water passage into it and which bolts to the front cover
Made from 1982-1998

So I'd say the biggest "tell" for the V1501 vs. the V1502 appears to be the water pump. The 1501 appears to have a water passage cast into the front cover, and the V1502 incorporates a part of this water passage in the pump itself, which bolts to the front cover. Unfortunately, this does little to specifically tell the differences between a 5432 based a V1501 than a 5432 based on a V1502.

Sorry - was slowly working on that reply during downtime throughout the day and didn't see your conclusion. My addition is in no way intended to refute your conclusion, only to add to it/reinforce it.

I have an early 5432, V1501 block, in my 1980 E38. Attached pictures show the Universal serial number and the water/exhaust jacket with a front cooling inlet instead of the later? side inlet elbow in the jacket. Another possible early/late 5432 vs. M40 indicator.

Hi guys,
I have a 5432, 1981 Ericson. Looking for the impeller on the water pump. Called up Kubota and they need to know what tractor the motor goes with....they "upgraded" their system.

Where on the block is the V # stamped? Also if you have any info on which Kubota motor is the crossover, that may help too.

Thanks!!

AWESOME!
Had to scrap a little bit of paint and found it

Does the foto show the Hull # as 34?

Yes, that HIN is for a 1981 model year, hull #34. Are you really looking for an impeller for the belt-driven fresh water (coolant) pump? I'm not sure they sell the impeller separately. Or, are you referring to the raw water pump, usually an Oberdorfer or Sherwood pump with a replaceable impeller? Kubota doesn't sell that equipment, which is part of the conversion that Universal made to use it in boats.
