Freeze Warning Advice

Growing up in the Midwest, I am very familiar with freezing temps. Our boats were pulled out of the water and winterized for the off season.

We are expecting a hard freeze tonight here (12-15 degrees) with winds from 25-35. Our boat sits in a protected slip in a large bayou.

We are only expecting the freeze tonight and tomorrow night with highs in the mid 30's for the next couple of days.

My thinking is it won't be cold long enough to cause problems but...........?

I'm thinking your water temperature is still high, and that is probably going to keep it OK, but if it's easy to drain any fresh water lines, pump a little anti-freeze through the head etc., it certainly wouldn't hurt.

David is correct, that the surrounding water temperature will likely keep the hull relatively warmer. On Vancouver Island, BC where I sail year round, the temp can occasionally drop like that. When it does, I drain any water lines if possible, keep my dehumidifier fan (yeah, those flat silver ones from West Marine) plugged in as it generates some warmth, and I leave a trouble lamp with a 100 watt light bulb on in the engine room which adds heat to avoid the engine freezing up. I run the bilge pump to empty any water from that line as well.

None of these steps replace all the winterizing steps one would normally do, but they can help to avoid trouble for a couple of nights if it doesn't get too cold.

Rick,

In NE Alabama it gets colder than that often. I realizes that the boat wasn't ever getting to freezing after having it out of the water for a winter and without the water under the boat a water line that followed the hull contour crossing starboard to port froze for the first time while on the trailer so with the boat back in the water I didn't winterize for two years. BAD MOVE freeze plug our of head not so bad, crack in water jacket of manifold and head BAD. 15 minutes of work would have saved 4 hours and $400. This is not the time to go "shave" the storm is coming, do at least a light winterization, probably not necessary but an ounce of prevention rule applies. I winterize before it is going to get to 25 degrees now.

Thanks all!
I am going to run my Mermaid heat pump set at 50 degrees inside. I'm going to close all the thru hulls too.

Yeah dig it. A buddy of mine just got back from Costa, and went across to Nicaragua to go sled down a volcano on Christmas day. And had the nerve to bring back pictures..

I supposed to do a delivery to the Keys on a buddy's 38 Leopard in late Feb. Maybe I can convince him to keep going....:)

Rick, you would not be sorry. It would only take about another week and a half if you didn't stop, but that's impossible because there are too many nice places to stop so it could be 2/3 months. Have a nice trip.

Rick,

Sounds great. I haven't sailed in Pensacola. What's it like? Is it protected or are out in the Gulf?

Pensacola Bay is huge and is on the ICW. There is a pass from the bay to the Gulf so we are blessed with many places to go (in/out/across).

Today I talked the Admiral into going with me for a quickie 2.5 hour sail around the bay. I told her with the boat projects we're starting this week, it will be the last time we can sail till mid February. It worked! LOL!:0
