I've been thinking about switching to Lifepo4 house batteries as well. For my purposes, I really think that the $ would be better spent on a solar array rather than a fancy alternator, solar has gotten really cheap and for less then $2k I could easily add a solar array which should be easily able to handle my loads, keep the lead acid starting battery isolated with the alternator with a dc/dc charger or even just an inverter - ac charger - house for incident charging when motoring.
