Be very sparing and careful with that. Ajax would have the same (or worse) problem as using the little white"miracle" sponges, in that it is an actual abrasive and will damage the top of the gel coat it paint. The sponges work because they have powdered diamond out other abrasives.
The WM essay in-off cleaner has a touch of acid in it and for paint prep will remove everything, without touching gel coat. Just make sure to really flush and rinse it off. The stuff is strong enough to take off ablative bottom paint and I'm not sure how it would do on a single part paint.
