The stapled-up-leatherette also allows water to enter the hull, then run along the inside of the headliner, like a circus tent-top, to a wide range of locations in the boat. :)
This is exactly what happened to our boat. It was a pretty minor leak when the boat was in the water and it slowly, slowly did it's damage above the headliner without much for visible indications of what was going on. Then we had the boat hauled for a bottom job and the yard blocked the boat a bit stern down. This caused the location of the leak to allow a lot more water into the boat and the next time I came to the boat the headliner was sagging due to the weight of the water it was holding up. I ended up having to rip everything out in the v-berth. Still haven't got it put back together...
