san diego mooring question

Hi,

I'm considering buying a boat in San Diego on craisgslist that is being offered with a transfer of mooring at Shelter Island. I'm actually interested in the mooring rather than the boat? I was wondering if anybody had any experience with such a transaction, especially in San Diego Harbor. I'm looking for advice on what to look for and ask for that might help protect me from being scammed.

Thanks, Chris

If the mooring isn't privately owned, it should be a simple matter of calling the appropriate harbor master and asking about the moorage transfer policy.
If he/she tells you that moorages don't automatically transfer with the sale of a boat, or if there's a waiting list for vacant moorages - end of story.

However, if the moorage CAN transfer with the boat, you'd want to know the procedure, pre-approval policies of new tenants, whether a contract or deposit is necessary to secure the moorage, etc, etc.

If the moorage is under the direct control of the boat's owner, and can transfer with the boat to new owner, that should be clearly specified in the purchase contract, along with all the other conditions normally stated in legally binding agreements. If in doubt, consult an attorney.
