SF Bay Boatyards (British Marine and Industrial)

N.A.

E34 / SF Bay
Does anyone have experience with British Marine and Industrial (In Alameda, CA)?

My E34 needs new standing rigging and a mast refurbish. Maybe work on a forehatch. Got a quote which may be reasonable but it's a lot of money nonetheless and I figured I'd look around on this one. @Pete the Cat discusses them a bit in this thread

But I'd like to hear more -- Yelp says they do more powerboats than sailboats, and the (few) reviews make them sound more like a bottom-painting place.

Anyway, Pete's recommendation in the thread above was very good, but I'd love to hear from anyone (Peter and ideally others as well), especially if you've had experience with British Marine for work like rigging/mast refurbish. Recommendations for other places also welcome.

Much appreciated!

I had the standing rigging & running rigging on my E35-3 done by South Beach Riggers in Sausalito. They did a great job and I'm very happy with their work.

I am the one who recommended British Marine. It is true that now they do more power than sail--but that is because they don't advertise and have a loyal customer following for mechanical issues that power boats have. And, like many (most?) Bay Area yards bottom painting is their revenue stream for much of what they do. As I mentioned, the yard has an old small travel lift and the machine shop will not win awards for neatness. However, I have taken my boats there for complex mechanical issues and the father son who run the place get things done correctly and have all the ability to fix engines, drive trains, plumbing and electrical quickly and at a reasonable price. They know how to fix things rather than just replace stuff--decades of experience. The bottom painting is generally done more carefully than the other yards I have used-thorough prepwork and coating process with extra layers in the right places--this work in other yards is often delegated to the newbies and result have shown it. I think most yards just take the rigging off with the mast down and send it out--I am not sure you are going to get any real professional advice or assessment from any yard about design or condition---most yards just replace on demand when the mast is out. You need a professional rigger for assessment and design. Some yards have arrangements with professional riggers to allow them to work in their yards. If you want design or assessment, I would ask any yard how they work that in the yard of your choice.

Many thanks!

PM me if you have suggestions on local (SF bay area - I'm in Oakland) riggers :)
