Snow and ice removal

Wow! It’s cold here in the mid-Atlantic and northeast and we’ve just been through a rough snow storm with lots of ice. My boat, among many on the Chesapeake, winter in the water. This year there’s been more ice on the water but also snow and ice accumulation top side. I live two hours away from so I have my marina clearing the decks, cockpit and especially the two outer scuppers that aren’t connected to a seacock like the inner scuppers are which have been winterized with antifreeze.

So the service manager sent me some before and after images where they cleared the boat and chipped out the scuppers. Lots of ice came down in Annapolis. He also mentioned a slight list to port and I’m not sure if that was before or after the snow clearing. So has anyone noticed a list to port, or starboard for that matter, on their boats? I think I may actually have a slight list to port but I believe that I’m so use to it that it goes more or less unnoticed.

Bob you have reminded me to go check on my boat LOL! Stay safe out there in these horrid conditions--I have never seen Annapolis like this but it is basically one big glacier right now.

During the off season months of winter I check on the boat every month. Looks like I’ll be making a visit soon even though I was there a few weeks ago but these are extraordinary times weather wise.

Bob,

I was in Deale for 18 yrs at Herrington Harbor North marina where the creek and marina only froze solid one year. That year it looked like you could walk across to Drum Point.

This year I am in Rhode Island and we have been deep into this polar vortex like you. Portsmouth, RI is salt water off Buzzards Bay. Between the tides moving the water and salinity, I have been in good shape.

This past Weekend, we had 23 inches of snow but with two Coast Guard approved heaters running full time, and a full cockpit enclosure, the snow did not pose a problem.

The Puget Sound doesn't get that cold, but we have had a few cold spells. I was surprised to find the week link with my set up was the bilge pump hose freezing right before it exited the hull. I have an oil heater I set to low and leave in the cabin during winter, but the heat must not have made it all the way back to the stern. When I checked on the boat I found a bilge full of water from melting snow and the pump running non stop without being able to actually get any of the water out of the boat. Now I try to remember to remove an engine panel so the heat can circulate to the aft locker where the bilge pump thru hulls are located.

I read this morning that in places on the Chesapeake the ice is 6 inches thick! I'm moving to Herrington Harbor South (very impressed with both HH north and south BTW) this March. Here is a screen shot, from one of their web cams, of the entrance to HHS I just took. It's all ice and extends well into the marina. Pray for and early spring!

I was disappointed I didn't get my boat back in the water this fall, now not so much. All the best to all, it appears were in this "polar vortex" for a spell. Solomon's is a mirror of you folks up north, just a thicker layer of ice crust.

We're on Middle River and the extreme low tides have several boats listing. We just shoveled the ice and snow off our 32-III and out of the cockpit. I noticed the shower bilge was frozen (added more pink stuff and it turned to slush) but I think the bilge pump hose might be frozen just before it exits the boat. What's the best plan to avoid trouble with the bilge pumps and hoses now? Yes we thoroughly winterized all lines and hoses but these cold times are challenging the pink.

Yep.:)

I meant that the tides on Middle River (actually Frog Mortar Creek) are sooo low that some boats are aground at their slip and listing. Also: Christian Williams I LOVED your video "Welcome to the New Age of Sailing Skipper". (you can make videos sitting down and I sure hope you continue to)

My problem might be all the cans of Dinty Moore Beef Stew I have stored on board….which are of course frozen solid now. :egrin:

Is your fuel tank full? Our 32-3 can list to port with a full fuel tank, especially when the starboard fresh water tank is empty.

Yes, it’s full because I fill it up for the winter months and the big water tank to starboard is empty except for a bit of antifreeze, so that probably accounting the for list to port and not the copious amount of Dinty Moore I have stored on board. (Just kidding about that, of course, I keep more vodka on board that beef stew.)
