Solvent needed

Greetings to all, I removed the grabrails from my 86' E28 today and it was no easy task. The adheasive used by Ericson is still strong after 24 years. This stuff is the consistancy of sidewalk chewing gum in August and as mean as a dime store rat trap. Does anyone know of a solvent that will clean up the residuals without harming the fiberglass? Thanks in advance for any help.

Best,
Frank

Toxic Chemicals to the rescue

Wear vinyl gloves, use lacquer thinner first and when you want more power go with acetone.
Mean stuff -- probably take the hide off a rhino, it would...
but it works for me.

Xylene is my solvent of choice before I go to acetone..but for this application you might be surprised at how much Goo Gone will do.

Yup - try Goo Be Gone or OOPPs for residual adhesive, as acetone is actually too polar to do a good job with these.

If you really have trouble 3M actually makes an adhesive remover too.
