That old adage about reefing…

E35-3 - New Jersey
Predictwind and LuckGrib were forecasting some beefy winds yesterday as we set out from Sandy Hook Bay in NJ, so using the “If you think about reefing, then reef” logic, I put in our deepest reef as we left the mooring. After about 45 minutes, I felt silly and contemplated taking it out. Thought better of it and decided to give it another 20 minutes or so, thinking as we cleared the point of Sandy Hook, the forecast winds might show. Prudent choice! The winds kicked up, gusts between 20-25, and coupled with the 2-4 foot swells every five seconds or so, we had ourselves a day. I’m thoroughly impressed with how well - and enjoyable - it is to sail the 35-3 when reefed. She really does handle beautifully.

It was even better yesterday. Close reach the entire four hours, 15-20 knots winds - gust to 25 - with 4-6 foot waves off the front quarter, and she sailed perfectly. Hit nine knots at one point surfing those waves - all with that third reef in. Was pretty much bliss.

Christian Williams has produced a fine video about what can be learned and enjoyed when sailing in 30 kts. Worth repeated watching IMHO.
