Transmission trouble

The transmission on my 1985 Ericson 35-3 has failed, and there is no model number on the transmission. It is marked Hurth ZF.
Does anybody know which transmission goes with the Universal M25 engine on this boat?
Thanks,
Mark

Likely the original was a Hurth model HBW 50. There are several past threads about this transmission here and also at other sites like Sailboatowners and SailNet. a few owners are happy with this model, but more than a few are not....
I see references to a PRM 60 model for replacement, although some small changes in engine mounting may be needed.
You ought to check in with these folks also: https://parts.betamarineusa.com/pro...OA55bqTGm2yXI7Ak2m5F9bPYfEUJMzs8HtoLfDdsTLl2K

Let us know how this goes. My advice might be considered prejudicial, being as how I replaced our Universal M25XP/Hurth 50, with a new Betamarine25 drivetrain.

Just a reminder to those of us who have the Hurth 50. It is probably not the most robust design, I have had one apart and can see that how it works. Key thing to remember is to not sail when left if forward gear. Eventually, the force can over take the pressure plats and grind them so they will not hold. Go to neutral or reverse. I have been told that some prefer reverse because the lubrication is inadequate for the main bearings when the big gears are not sloshing the oil and that could be argued, but I cannot confirm. A service bulletin says put it in neutral or reverse and take your chances if you have a feathering or folding prop. FWIW.

What ever you do , do not rebuild the Hurth or replace it with another Hurth. I nursed a slipping Hurth for four years before finally replacing it with a Twin Disc MG340. The Twin Disc bolted up easily and I was able to do the job myself with a chain hoist and basic tools. I also replaced he damper plate which made a huge difference in vibration.

Make sure that your engine alignment is good before you declare the transmission failed. Mine slipped and made a terrible grinding noise until I figured out that my engine alignment had gotten worse, putting too much stress on the transmission. When I corrected the alignment, the transmission worked again.
