Trying to remove my steering wheel on 35-3

I was just going to remove my Ray Marine autopilot to get it fixed, when I realized after multiple attempts that I don't know how to remove the steering wheel? Is that a nut in the middle, or some kind of cover? I treated it like it was a nut that could be screwed off. But have had no luck. Any tips or pointers would be very appreciated. As you can see, my photography skills are on par with my mechanical aptitude.20250703_140321.jpg

That is a nut that unscrews but is sometimes stuck. Spray with a good lubricant and use the biggest wrench you can find, with gradually increasing force. You'll need to steady the wheel with pressure the other way. It should come loose, no big deal.

Thank you! Should I go clockwise or counter clockwise?

Same thing happened to me first time attempting to remove that nut when we bought the boat a few years back. Wouldn't budge. I assume the previous owner hadn't removed it in a while. As Frank mentioned above, a plumber's wrench was needed and did the job. Once you get the nut off, clean the thread and give it a bit of grease/lubricant before reapplying. Will make removal easier in the future.

I have the same Yacht Specialties nut for my wheel as in your photo. Lefty-Loosey. Counter-clockwise to unscrew. Once you get it off, only light pressure should be needed to re-secure it.

A block of wood against the nut and a few brisk hits with a hammer will generally loosen the bond quickly....for me anyway :)
