Dead Windlass Battery. Replace, or run cable?

I'm an electric windlass neophyte, but suspect voltage drop could be a consideration in the battery placement? That's a long run, but proper cable size can mitigate.

    New Interior Cushions

I've been toying with the idea of getting a SailRite sewing machine for awhile now so I could learn to do canvas work and sail repair. Bob's excellent cushion project provides even more DIY incentive. My wife and I both dislike the cushions on Gravlax because the foam doesn't have much bounce...

    Zipper Pull Repair [Master Thread]

Most of the zippers on Gravlax are seized and I have replaced two of them. I'll replace additional zippers when I need access. While I first thought it would be difficult, it turned out to be fairly straightforward with a stitch cutter from the local hobby shop. Rather than trying to wrangle...

    T-fitting in Raw Water Circuit

I just got back my heat exchanger after an acid flush. The outfit that did the work said the freshwater side was almost totally clogged. The parts guy said new exchangers run around $1500, so I am happy they were able to refurbish the old one. They are also putting together a replacement...

What's wrong with this electrical plan?

Joshua- I think you are on the right track with your conceptual plan. I did the refit of our 1988 38-200 last winter. I revised the conceptual plan 4 times before implementing and it changed again during the build. The following is the as-built. We've had Gravlax for about a year and half...

    T-fitting in Raw Water Circuit

Thanks for the responses. Yes, I think I am headed towards boiling out the exchanger, regardless. That makes sense following the effort to take it apart. The flange appears to be newer than the rest of the elbow and can be re-used. The rest of the elbow and gasket I plan to replace. Good...

    T-fitting in Raw Water Circuit

An update on my progress.... I could not effectively inspect the elbow in place after removing the hoses so I removed the exhaust elbow yesterday from my Universal 5432. While there is a fair amount of internal corrosion, my inclination is that there is not enough to restrict the raw water flow...

    T-fitting in Raw Water Circuit

Thanks to all for responses. We replaced the coarse grating at the raw water intake at the time of purchase. It seems like a good method to keep plastic bags or kelp from getting sucked into the intake. The yard mechanic seemed very competent, so I'm not ready to disregard his judgement just...

    T-fitting in Raw Water Circuit

When the mechanic changed the coolant and checked the freshwater side of the system, I also had him check the heat exchanger and he determined it was in good shape as was the zinc. Ideally, I would have done that work myself, but time was running short for a planned cruise. Christian's video...

    T-fitting in Raw Water Circuit

We have overheating issues with our Universal 5432 and substantial amounts of steam mixed with the exhaust. I had a mechanic check the freshwater/coolant side of the heating system at the beginning of the summer and everything appears to be fine. When he sea-trialed the engine for an hour, it...

Surveyor in the greater Seattle area for '76 E27

We bought Gravlax about a year and half ago and was happy with the survey conducted by Jim Merrick (425-998-8546; www.merrickmarine.com) out of Mill Creek. Everything above is spot on. We used Jim on two surveys and results of the first survey led to us not buying the first boat we made an...

Whisky for a Future NW Rendezvous ?

I think you mean a Linkwood. Here's a link for a listing from what sounds like the same bottling. https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/22978/linkwood-12-year-old-bot1980s It is certainly a rare whiskey. My understanding is single malts age better in the cask than in the bottle. Old bottlings...

How the heck does one get fingernails into a crack in the PNW?

We ended up at Tyee Marina in Tacoma for our 38-200 purchased last year and we will probably stick around for a few years. Not a lot of amenities, but it has a price to match that level, which helps pursue the upgrades we want to do. It's a bit of a haul to the San Juan's, but offers South Sound...

    Electrical woes

There's no sensor in my panel. It's a simple circuit. Perhaps a PO accidentally reversed the neutral and hot wires on the polarity light so it is always on when correct polarity and off with reverse polarity.
