Larry,
I also have a 35-3. I removed the tank and had it repaired at a local welding shop. It had the typical pin hole in the lowest corner. I was able to get the tank out of the companion way in one piece. I had to remove the sliding hatch and it was not necessary to remove the traveler and hood.
Looks exactly like mine. You should not have to cut anything to get it out. Skinny part of the tank out of the companion way first. And just barely makes it out.
Jeff,
Also. I think that you can separate the tape from the tank without cutting it. Use a putty knife or chisel and the bond will release. This would make reinstall even easier and no worries about cutting liner.
Jeff,
After the tank was welded and pressure tested the re install was the easy part, the hardest part was figuring out the removal. I can’t think of anything that I would do differently. The only thing I can say is to be careful when cutting the glass tape, i cut through a small portion of...

Yes I will definitely share everything I find with the other u bolts. It is probably going to be 3 weeks before I get back to the boat and finish. I will take lots of pictures of everything.
Also. Yes there is no way to inspect the bolt where it broke is right at the deck level. I’m interested in seeing the condition of all the others. There was actually a small amount of rust discoloration around the deck plate. Some of the other also have some stains with some being clean.
Yes I did buy them through Garnhauer. They were great to work with, took about three weeks to be delivered to me. The bolts look great and are consistent size. Hopefully they all fit easily. Glad to hear butyl is a good choice. I re bedded the fixed port lights and really like working with it.
Yes. Very surprised. I had the rig tuned and the lowers were very loose. When the rigger was tightening that one , when he was only at 8% there was a very loud ping. The corrosion was almost completely through that side of the bolt. Definitely changing all 8 to be on the safe side. Luckily...
I have a broken u bolt on a lower chainplate. I have ordered 8 to replace all of them on our 1985 e 35-3. What is the best beding compound? Is butal tape a good option?
Thank you Loren
Now I’m leaning more toward a non hydraulic adjuster and getting a manual adjuster. I see some with a wheel and some with folding handles. I haven’t seen any with winch a handle. I agree with you it’s good for all sailing.
thank you
Thanks Mark. I’m leaning toward removing it and making it permanent. I know the racers hate that idea, I have gotten mixed opinions. It seems that there is not as much benefit to have it with a masthead sloop. Either way I’m getting rid of the hydraulics.
Hello All,
I have a Navtec hydraulic Backstay adjuster on our 35-3 that I would like to eliminate. It leaks and does not hold pressure. I would like something simple or eliminate an adjuster all together. Wondering what the options are.
Thanks
