    1987 E34 rudder issues

Morning. Sorry for the late reply, Loren alerted me to the question, just now getting to it, having unearthed the 2017 invoice; 5 years and a pandemic later, use these numbers carefully! Finco Fabrication, Santa Ana CA PHONE 714-973-2878 Cal 40 Schumacher Design (Cal 40) $2,800, which...

New Mast/Standing Rigging and Olson History

Thanks Charlie, I've saved these to my 'Mast and Rigging' folder and completely understand the 'same gauge and a smaller one', as we scramble for access a smaller one every year. Ours is 1 x 19, gave a fair amount of consideration to a Dyneema system...but watching the stick go sideways in a...

New Mast/Standing Rigging and Olson History

This mooring pic is from today (6-3-2022) as I departed on the tender. We 'raced' Beer Can Wednesday (quotes intentional, as the goals were to make the line, start, sail the course, finish, not break anything. Mission accomplished) and today was a clean up and make some adjustments. The other...

Scenario Planning: Down comes the rig

I may have more to add to this, once I quell the 'retch reflex', but this should be a good start... "pretty puckered" is an understatement; there certaily was ample 'sphincter crinkle', and lots of cotton mouth (eventually). We did prove that our bolt cutters were useless, able to put a barely...

New Mast/Standing Rigging and Olson History

Charlie B: Thanks for the offer, my daughter is living in SF, Haight-Ashbury District, kitty-corner from the SF Mint. I was there the week prior to the 3 Bridge Fiasco, made the trip to Watsonville to visit Buzz's shop and inspect mast process. We also took the ferry to Sausalito, ate lunch on...

    New mast for 35-3

'Big oops!', eh? Sorry to hear this. Loren made me aware of this situation, so you can blame him... I was dismasted last summer, Buzz Ballenger of Ballenger Spar Systems built a replacement, shipping from Watsonville CA to Chicago IL tomorrow. Buzz knows the Ericson fleet (and the Olsons!)...

East to West through the Great Lakes —- Lake Champlain to Lake Superior

You'll love the Apostle Islands, once you get there and acclimate. We attended a friend's wedding July 4th weekend in Duluth 5 years ago and there were still remnants of big ice chunks floating within eyesight from land. Brrrrrr. Another observation from the 4th balcony: investigate trucking...

New Mast/Standing Rigging and Olson History

Christian, thanks for that link, most of which was muted or forgotten over time, indicative of the healing process. And to Slick470, I've added the 911/FB nugget to the 'conversation' template. I just confirmed with the Santa Cruz Yacht Club that a) they are open and b) they are serving dinner...

New Mast/Standing Rigging and Olson History

The title could be inverted to read ''Olson History and New Mast/Standing Rigging". I'll let Loren figure out where best to put this... It's been a while since I logged on, so a brief review will help: Yes, there was a dismasting in July. Yes, it put a huge damper on the summer and forced an...

Ericson/Olson 34 on the cover of SA?

'Smaller world, getting smaller...' Loren recommended I use the white phone in the lobby to update the group, but it had no dial tone. Yes, SA ran the picture of us striking the Race Committee flags post-race at the dock of Columbia Yacht Club. I 'borrowed' the clubs extending flag pole for...

    2021 CYC Race to Mackinac

Loren, I read this WYSIWYG, couldn't figure it out, tried a few options, none really worked. Is it 'Where You Sail Is Where You Go'? Or something even simpler?

    2021 CYC Race to Mackinac

Thanks to all who have chimed in with thoughts, they're appreciated. Charlie's PHRF Cert helped compare rigs, now I know it was a tall rig, as our #'s are comparable, as well as the rating. The 2021 LMPHRF certificate is attached for reference purposes. 1 important item has been Sharpied, an...

    2021 CYC Race to Mackinac

Wonder if Buzz knows how appreciated he is… Thanks Alan, yes, things could have gone much further south. Technically, there was some boat damage, as the upper lifeline snapped like a kite string and the forward teak trim eyebrow looks like a spastic beaver attacked it. Both easily replaced!

    2021 CYC Race to Mackinac

Thanks for this, I’ll compare to my PHRF, which is also 105. I’m betting tall rig (but not a lot of $!) Another Buzz B reference just came in from a fellow Lake Michigan sailor. Rock star!

    2021 CYC Race to Mackinac

2nd Buzz Ballenger reference today! My 1st exposer was him supplying the replacement sheaves when I swapped out the (ancient) OEM wire-to-ripe sheaves of the masthead. Because I’m essentially a functional idiot (generous self assessment), I have no clue if it was a tall or short rig. I have the...
