2022 Ericson PNW Rendezvous, Genoa Bay July 22-24

Folks, I work at Raven Marine in Sidney. I may be able to arrange a guest speaker on either mechanical, electrical or rigging. And my trade is canvas and upholstery. I will ask around and get back to the group. on my end I would love to learn more about possible diesel alternatives to our old...

    Tackling the transmission

update: more research and examination of the output shaft components and I noticed something. The space between the forward gear and the “thrust washer” was bigger than the corresponding space on the reverse gear. I found out the thrust washer is an integral part of the clutch system, exerting...

    Tackling the transmission

A Valiant 40! A superb vessel indeed. That would be a v-drive right? How nice to be able to access the transmission from the aft cabin. But the stern tube is tucked right under the engine Sure beats doing boat yoga in the laz of my E30..

    Tackling the transmission

I saw that too. I know that universals have a pretty pronounced knock on the power stroke, something to do with the very low compression and the inertia on the flywheel. This probably translates to a repetitive tapping on the splines, and as the wear gets worse the tapping turns into more of a...

    Tackling the transmission

Frank, doing the damper plate is pretty straightforward. A replacement is around $250 I am not trained on transmissions, but it is simply a matter of reading the manual carefully and labelling everything really well. Reference photos are my Thor’s Hammer too

    Tackling the transmission

Was a hurth hbw 5 on a Universal 25 diesel. We started by diagnosing as best we could: ran the engine at different rpm, pushed some water and pulled some. I could hear the sound coming through the shift cable, so I was pretty sure it was a component internal or adjacent to the transmission. The...

    Tackling the transmission

Drivetrain started making an unsettling rattle/grinding sound. Some looking around and discovered nobody in my area services these transmissions. So I pulled it and opened it up. Found the damper plate was shot and about to fall to pieces, and had a good look at the Hurth gearbox. New plate and...

    Installing planar 2KW in our 1981 E30+

Thank you for your concern. I do not wish to die on Leela, unless it is in an epic white-knuckled fight for survival on the mountainous swells of some distant sea. At that time I will have a very large beard as well, with arms that look like two sinewy sharks fighting over their prey. The...

    Installing planar 2KW in our 1981 E30+

While I agree with you that a bulkhead mounted stove type heater is sufficient for heat, I have always struggled with the chimney pipe. The requirements make it just too bulky on the cabin top. I have bought a name brand Planar unit, and a muffler as well, and I will be arranging my ducting to...

    Installing planar 2KW in our 1981 E30+

I will post some photos of the progress. I have been researching common pitfalls and careful considerations. More info to come shortly!

    Installing planar 2KW in our 1981 E30+

In a few weeks I will be installing a small diesel furnace in the aft end of our Leela. I see a decent space for it on the back side of the port lazarette (plywood bulkhead) right next to the rudder stock. From there the heated air will vent straight into the quarter berth through a single 18...

    2022 NW Rendezvous?

On the Canadian side I am a big fan of Genoa Bay. In the American side I love Friday Harbour for the large marina and access to lovely shops and dining. I will continue to envision a spring/summer of opening up and moving around. Kevin
