Rehabilitation of interior house panels in E32-3

Update from my earlier post, I managed to patch the damaged area to my satisfaction, as shown below: I removed the rotten veneer and underlying plywood for a defined area and cut a filler piece of plywood to match the area. The filler plywood was epoxied into place. Once cured, the teak...

    ATN Mastclimber line recommendations, etc.

I think this may be the main key, along with possibly a lower stretch line, like Dyneema core. The data sheet offered by @Dave G. shows that a 3/8" Sta-Set halyard may need something like 800 pounds pre-load in order to be stiff enough to climb efficiently. And, as @vanilladuck suggests, my...

    ATN Mastclimber line recommendations, etc.

Yes. Nothing "slipped". Breaking strength is not at all related to "stretchiness" (modulus of elasticity). Source: retired professional mechanical engineer. I'd love to hear from anyone who has used the ATN mast climber or a similar rig. The ATN uses two clutch devices. One supports the bosun's...

What makes a good project boat?

Ideally, any project boat would eventually graduate to "maintenance list" status. I like to think that my 32-3 is near to that, after three years' ownership and a few minor work items: New standing rigging Media-blast and Awlgrip spars Replace all electronics with new wind instruments, water...

    ATN Mastclimber line recommendations, etc.

I acquired an ATN Mastclimber right after I became an Ericson owner 3 years ago, and used it (much to the concern of the selling broker) to inspect the masthead before I sailed away with my new boat. But I had difficulty with the device due, apparently, to the elasticity of my halyards. I think...

Sea trial for 1990 Ericson 34-2 next week

One year ago, I paid $1,410 for all new lifelines of 316 1x19, made to my dimensions and installed by me, 32 ft boat.

What makes a good project boat?

The headliner is a good example of why a question like yours can only really be answered by you. It all depends on what you want. A headliner can be ripped out and replaced with paint, or with new panels of some custom design, or, if willing to spend the money, it can be replaced/restored to...

    Troubleshoot spin halyard reinstallation

    2) Yes, I have been able to get things moving again after multiple jambs. I will try snapping the line with the line outside the mast and the messenger inside. It's probably all in the wrist. Wish me luck. 3) I guess I will be in the market for some inexpensive 1/4" line, possibly after visiting...

    Troubleshoot spin halyard reinstallation

After hauling the boat for the winter in SE Connecticut, I replaced each of the halyards with a 1/8" nylon messenger to save them from environmental exposure. I did the same last year, with no spring recommissioning issues. Each halyard is whipped at each end, with a messenger loop* to...

New Fresh Water Head Flush Installation

It seems to be common knowledge that using fresh water for flushing the head is the best protection against foul odors leaching through plumbing hoses. A few different arrangements have been used for accomplishing that in boats like ours, including: 1.) Replace the traditional head with one...

    CNG to propane conversion

I wrote this reply last night, but seems there was a problem with upload, so here it is… Gray with white stripe and black is the correct color code for the LP solenoid and stove wiring according to the wiring diagram on page 5-1A in the owner's manual for the 35-3. The wire gauges are mostly...

New hot water heater in 32-3

Thanks, but yes. The cold water line connected no problems. The adapter threads (male) are clearly tapered. I threw out the brass elbow I tried first, on concern it might not be tapered. If it doesn’t “self heal”, I guess I’ll find some liquid sealant.

New hot water heater in 32-3

Funny you should mention that. The hot water mixing valve is brass, but it has a stainless steel adapter with male pipe threads. My first fitting is a red brass street elbow, and I have been frustrated with stopping a very slow one drop-per-55 seconds leak where the elbow mates to the adapter. I...

    E32-3 Traveler in the cockpit?

You probably know that a few Ericson models have the traveler mounted aft of the companionway, so those would, in my opinion, be the first place to look for guidance for any change. One thing that occurs to me is that by bringing the traveler into the cockpit, you will not be able to pull the...

    CNG to propane conversion

Regarding open, versus sealed but drainable lockers, I think the regulations are based on the understanding that, like water, propane vapor is a fluid heavier than air. Given that, if there is a propane vapor leak, you do not want it to flow into the boat. The original Ericson propane lockers...
