35-3 transmission won't go into reverse

I created a new post to follow up on this one: https://ericsonyachts.org/ie/threads/35-3-transmission-wont-go-into-reverse.21067/#post-169355 for those interested. TLDR: it's the cable after all. Looks like a bracket let go. The reason I wasn't able to manually shift into reverse was that the...

35-3 Transmission won't go into reverse (Part 2)

Thanks for this, Christian. The cable slides just fine but it's probably the original from 35 years ago - and that binnacle needs a paint job - so maybe I should just do it right. Beats pulling the tranny so I guess I'm ahead.

35-3 Transmission won't go into reverse (Part 2)

I posted this thread in the fall (https://ericsonyachts.org/ie/threads/35-3-transmission-wont-go-into-reverse.21067/#post-169355) and thanks to all who responded. That one's a little stale so I thought I'd start again. After some more investigation I've determined that the reason my...

35-3 transmission won't go into reverse

"the bell housing has to be removed from the engine" - yeah that's what I was afraid of :(

35-3 transmission won't go into reverse

I had thought about that but it seems to be the stock prop... but will investigate!

35-3 transmission won't go into reverse

Thanks! Perhaps this is a silly question but is there any way at all to replace the trans without pulling the engine?

35-3 transmission won't go into reverse

Yeah that's the thing I tried manually shifting at the transmission and experienced the same behavior. I am due to replace the fluid too but I can't see how that would help very much in this case but worth a try.

35-3 transmission won't go into reverse

Sorry great engine but seems a little bit weak for the task. I do maybe 5kts at 3200? Updated the original post to clarify.

35-3 transmission won't go into reverse

That is good to know about ease of replacement but ho boy a new transmission is not cheap and yet rebuilding the old one doesn't seem cost effective neither! Buy a boat, they said... :esad:

    New mast for 35-3

Sure @Nick J - thanks for the reminder. I wound up replacing with a brand new Selden, courtesy of Maloney Marine Rigging. It was an ordeal and I'm still working with the insurance company 18 months later but the rig is beautiful!

35-3 transmission won't go into reverse

Hello, I'm having some trouble with my original (1988) Hurth HBW-50. This spring it stopped going into reverse. I was hoping for a stretched cable but I fear it's a bigger deal than that. What's odd about the behavior is that the shift positions have changed so it's not necessarily as simple as...

    New mast for 35-3

Funny. No, the mast was properly stored for the winter but unfortunately at car level.

    New mast for 35-3

Without going into details, a car hit my mast and totaled it. His insurance company will be paying for a replacement and now I'm trying to find one The mast in question has a Kenyon label on it. Of course I'm going to start there, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of any advice or pitfalls I...

    Ericson 35-3 wing keel width?

... for anyone reading this, the width turns out to be 40". Makes life difficult, but not impossible, if you plan to transport on a hydraulic trailer.

    Ericson 35-3 wing keel width?

Quick question I am hoping someone can answer - to figure out overland transport options - does anyone know the width of the flukes on the wing keel? Thanks!
