The haul out was going too well... The keel joint hasn't shown a drop of seepage, the blisters are better than I thought they were going to be, the rudder seems solid, and the engine removal went well. Even the shaft looks good and we're going to shorten it to clean up the gap between the...
I believe the time has come to reach out to the assembled Ericson family, but not before a bit of background:
A month ago I shoved the prop strut laterally while crawling 'round beneath the boat...and it rocked about 1/8" to port and starboard (immediate thought = "this can't be good")
There is...
I broke my strut and need to replace. Looking for a used one, a source for a new one, and dimensions of the strut. Mine is still in the water while I try to find a trailer to pull it out. (Almost non-existant on Maui)
My boat is an Ericson 32-2 (1970), hull # 131. A few days ago I worked around my rudded stuffing box to replace the packing and I dropped some water around the "tube" to clean the place. The next morning I found a few drops of water aroud the strut. (you understand that the boat is in dry...
Hi all, I have seen a couple Ericson 38's, including one I just had surveyed, with a large distance between the strut and prop. The ABYC recomendation is that the distance be roughly the size of the diameter of the shaft.
Does anyone know why this distance is so much greater on Ericson...
Having my boat hauled today because I discovered a slow leak around the forward glass joint that covers the strut embedment. This has been an ongoing leak maybe a 1/2 cup a day for several years and been extremely hard to find. Only after cutting a new access hatch into the cabin sole did find...
After having my E28 pulled to survey the damage from entangling a %$@! crab pot I noticed a very small (maybe 1/64") of play. The mechanic at the yard said that it wasnt enough play to be a concern and that there really wasnt any way to tighten the strut. Any thoughts?
Best, and thanks in...
hello ericson folk! i am new to the site and purchased a Ericson 27 last summer. "Tangerine" is a beauty and my daughter and i have been enjoying her on the chesapeake bay. here is my conundrum... i was motor sailing back to havre de grace one late afternoon when the engine (universal diesel)...
My partner used my nifty underwater camera to take a nasty shot of our prop strut. What do you think?
Is my only replacement option the outfit in WA?
Any guess on boat yard hours for this job?
Thanks,
Skip
I have a 1976 32ft. The strut is a little loose. I know that there is no good way to firm it up. Inside, the gas tank sits directly over where the strut is, and from what I gather, everything is buried in material. My thought was to drill a couple of holes through the bottom of the strut...
Just had the boat hauled (1986 E-28), and noticed that there is play in the shaft strut at the hull. From some research looking at the owner's manual it looks like this is not bolted on, but glassed in from the interior of the hull. The complication is that it is under the fuel tank.
I think...
Mechanic working on my a4 says the bearing is worn. In his words it's shot. I know he's very overly cautious, and I appreciate that. BUT, I really want to FINALLY get her wet and begin sailing! (she's on jacks currently)
He insures me that if I don't fix it (as I'm inclined to wait until...
a dockline tangled in the prop-diver removed it. hauled the boat for a new paint job. found the strut bent--heated it up with a torch{temporary fix for now}. 1973 35' model. why is the bronze strut offcenter? none of the other boats in the yard are like this.
I have a 1983 E28+ that needs a new cutlass bearing. In looking into doing that job it appears that there is some play in the strut so it needs to be tightened up. There is no way to directly access the nuts on the ends of the bolts that hold the strut in place as they are glassed in. Should...
Hi,
I will need to replace the shaft strut and was wondering if anyone knows where I can procure one. Apparently mine is broken completely according to the diver. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brett
When I purchased my E27 it had a broken strut (FYI - the strut is the bronze fitting that has a bearing in that that the shaft pass through and right before the propellor attaches to it). I believe the purpose of the strut is to stablizes the shaft.
I had it repaired my first year I owned...
I have a 1986 Ericson 38-200 with the engine mounted under the galley, not the companion way stairs. I'm curious how you get to the strut support from the inside.
thanks

E-29 Reach Strut/jib photos or diagram
I purchased a 1974 E-29 this winter. I have managed to restep the mast and get the main sail in the air. However, I cannot figure out how the jib and reach strut assembly are suposed to go together. I have looked at some other boats at my marina (most...
We rigged up a line thst went oner the stbd cap rail from the port sheet winch to the strut .Then we set up the hooka rig. I went over the side with a 4lb hammer and as my wife kept the line tight I spent the next 2hrs hitting the strut thats a tuff job underwater. We were able to get about half...
What ever you do, do not run over the floats of a fishtrap in Pureto Rico in the middle of the night. We did. At about 2300hrs we on our way off shore from the s/e end of Pureto rico headed for Sun Bay in Visquez (Spanish Virgins) motorsailing into 12kt winds 4-5 swell all on thr nose (noserly)...
I'm in the yard in Venezuela. We hit a fish trap in PR bent the strut real bad but the shaft shark cut it off. I was able to some what bend it back but not far enough after 2hrs of underwater hammering with a 4lb hammer and a hooka rig. It got us this far.Got the shaft out, it's bent and...
Well here is one I’m happy with. And the whole project only cost me $25. With 86 of the 109 things on my E32-3 to do list Done I am getting to many of what I call “Optional Upgrades”. The fun stuff. Now we found the Dinette table awkward to lower and raise which we do a lot when cruising. So I...
Good evening everyone,
I have a couple of questions about my 72 35II that've been bugging me for a while now and hopefully someone can help me out. Number one is how is the shaft strut mounted to the boat? Mine seems to be on some flexible rubber-like base (very stiff) that is not through...
I purchased a 1982-E36-RonHolland last October. The prop strut is loose: with sideways pressure it will move about 1/8" to starboard, then return when the pressure is released.
Does anyone have a drawing of the shape of the strut and how it is installed. It appears to be glassed in, with no...
I am buying an Ericson 36C with a broken propeller shaft strut. Does anyone know where a strut is available or who can make one? Also, how is it attached? How much fiberglass needs to be dug out to get to the base?
Recently had my 1971 E29 hauled for bottom paint. Cutlass bearing was worn, so decided to replace it. Removed the cutlass strut, and found that the stainless securing bolts were badly damaged by electrolysis. On removing the cutlass bearing, the bronze strut itself cracked. The yard where...
The E27 manual recommends using a reaching strut with a symetrical spinnaker. Can anyone supply photos, drawings, specs, etc. that would show how to make and install one? My spinnaker sheets definitely drag on the shrouds when reaching.

Looking for advice on proper alignment of the strut that holds the prop shaft on a 1971 E32. Mine is bent to the starboard side and also appears to be canted "up" too much in the front. The strut appears to be made of bronze and molded into the hull. I'm considering heating it up and putting a...
With my 1983 E28+ is on the hard again until next Spring I noticed that the strut that holds the cutlass bearing (through which the prop shaft passes) is ever so slightly loose. The shaft does not move in the bearing, the entire strut moves a bit if I push back and forth. There are some fine...
I need to replace the strut for my propeller shaft. Has anyone gone through this task and have any suggestions. My boat yard is telling me it could be very expensive to fabricate one.
Thanks to all who replied to my request for info on removing the strut bearing from my E38 strut bearing. The yard tried to do it with the special tool (mentioned by some who replied to my original posting) and with the shaft still in the strut bearing. It didn't work because the bearing was...
My 1988 E-28 strut has a some slight movement. I even have a small crack in the fiberglass by the strut. The owners manual states the strut is bonded
to the hull. I was hoping to find some bolts to tighten but I think the strut bonding area is under the full fuel tank (oh no!). Have any of...

Backing over the stern line of a fore and aft mooring can be tough on your shaft strut. Can anyone tell be where I can obtain a new strut for my 1974 E35-2?
While I was being hauled last year, the lifting strap was on the shaft slightly bending the strut. I would like to heat it and attempt to tweak with a large pipe wrench.
I am wondering about the structural integrity of the strut. Has anyone had a reason to remove/replace/straighten. thanks
