I just finished the ALIR this past weekend in my 1980 Ericson 38.
We went in the PHRF Spinnaker Division.
Hate to admit I'm going to pound my chest here a little bit. We did the 190 km course in 1: 08: 42: 03, took first place in Division 4. Next boat in our division was 9 hours & 30 minutes behind us!
After starting with a #1, we put up a chute and where close reaching with in the Atlantic Ocean for 100 miles. Gybed, went around Montauk Point, and pointed her at Plum Gut. Couldn't carry the chute, put up a light reacher, made our way thru Plum Gut against a 2+ knot tide set, and aimed for the finish at Hempstead Harbor. (Not a true circumnavigation of the Island.) When we approached the finish, changed down to the dacron 1 and made a few tacks into the harbor and took the gun.
When we checked in about 2 miles away, RC actually told us we were the projected winners of Div. 4! Crossed the line at 2: 03 am on Sat morning, grabbed a mooring and ran to the bar, which Sea Cliff Yacht Club kept open till 4 am for all of us!
Wow!!
As a bonus I got a second place trophy for the classic boat division (older than 1986)
Some guys sailiing a 1937 wooden ketch had a pretty good beef about getting third place in that group!
PS, another E-38 did the race non-spin and took second in their division.
Go Ericson!
