Changing an impeller

Bepi

E27 Roxanne
I had noticed that my outboard was no long producing a strong stream like it used to, so I decided to dive into an impeller project and get it done fastso I can be back on the water as soon as possible.

The bolts of the lower unit came off like a breeze. All this being done in the water with my canoe, having tipped the gunnel below the tilted motor, so no chance of losing parts. the only hitch was the upper shift rod that sheared while trying to loosen the connector nut.

Sooo I order the part, but then find I must remove the powerhead And all the wiring and hosing to access the bolts holding the shift rod in place. Once the powerhead was off I realized I would need a new metal gasket and the two sufaces will need to be perfectly smooth to reinstall . Gasket ordered.
As I sat pondering the view of what remained of the motor still attached to the stern, memories stirred that my faith in the support bracket had been fading. As the upper and lower portions of the motor were off it would not take much more effort to remove it, bracket and all. It required crawling into my quarter birth to knock out a bolt with a hammer and then to go into my lazarette and knock out a bolt on the other side, otherwise everything came out with minor effort. A new bracket has been ordered.
All that remains is too reverse the process: install the bracket to the stern, then the center portion of the motor, then the motorhead, and then the lower unit (gear oil changed, no sign of water in old oil).

From the photo you see I was ready for a new impeller. Probably the easiest thing to replace in this whole project. The silver linings are a reliable motor, support bracket, and when I removed the old bracket I exposed my long lost ERY serial number! Which is located about 4 inches below the outside center of my cut out stern.
After five years of (mostly) care free sailing I am paying the piper this winter. Looking foward to spring.

"There was an old sailor who changed his impeller...for it no longer streamed the same way for the feller..."

Impeller was hard as rock.
