Ericson 36RH Hand Hold Poles

By request, I'm posting detailed pictures of the two hand hold poles located port and stbd at the bottom on the companionway (next to the sink (port) and nav desk (stbd) on the E36RH. These are standard one inch stainless tubing used for bow/stern pulpits, dodgers, etc.

Most critical handhold below. I have swung around the things like a rat on a string.

Did you add them?

No, I believe they were standard from the factory.

Another E36RH owner is missing his and asked for details.

Allow me to add that additional support for these tubes can be provided by 1 1/4" ss U-bolts from Home Depot.

On my boat, actually, the bulkhead moved when grabbed. The U-bolt secured it.

Handholds on our E31.

Christian and all, We have overhead teak handholds in the main cabin which goes a long way to helping in rough seas. Some years ago I added a Force 10 propane cabin heater to the port, forward bulkhead and flip flopped over adding a heat guard to the stack. It didn't take long to realize that a very real instinct prevented me or anyone else from reaching toward a heat source to steady ones self. That being said, I still didn't trust that it would still be grabbed in an instant of unbalance. The work around was to add a long teak handhold adjacent to the stack and closer to anyone walking past, photo attached. In fact, a similar handhold was offered in the same location as a factory option by Ericson just not mine. Cheers, Glyn Judson, E31 hull #55, Marina del Rey CA

In the E36RH layout both the port and stbd half-height bulkheads that the hand hold poles attach to are also the forward face of a substantial piece of structure. On port it is the galley sink and outboard storage cabinet as seen in the middle picture of post #1. On stbd it is the forward face of the Nav desk. Both of these structures are nearly the height of the bulkhead, are attached outboard at the hull and have a horizontal surface to box the structure and tie it all together making the poles rock solid. These poles are the first thing you grab when you are at the bottom of the companionway steps. They are close enough together on the E36RH that you can grab both at the same time to prevent swinging like a rodent :).
