I recently replaced my glow plug push button switch on our 1989 E-34. While motoring, I noticed an acrid smell, which turned out to be the 'melting' fuse holder I had added in the new, thicker 12 volt wire, supply line to the ignition panel. What could possibly cause that kind of draw??
Turned out that the glow plug switch had corroded so much inside that once pushed in, when you let go of the button to start the engine, it just stayed on, drawing just enough juice to heat and then melt the plastic, but not enough to pop the fuse.
The smell of plastic roasting on a boat while underway is a most usettling 'aroma'.
The fix is replacing the switch - a relatively inexpensive part.
