This narrator provides an excellent example of knowledge-free speculation.

What we do know is that they didn't take an EPIRB or a working satphone into the raft, which nowadays is the path to early rescue.

Given the low cost (relatively), accuracy and durability of satellite-based portable position reporting devices and emergency beacons, I can't imagine anyone making a trans-oceanic trip not having one (or more) as part of their standard equipment. Compared to the limited comms gear we had a few decades ago (and sailed anyway) there's no reason to take that kind of risk now. You can only be rescued if someone knows you're in trouble. The toughest SAR cases we had to manage were "overdues" - because they required so much detective work and speculation, and for longe voyages yielded impossibly large search areas.
