The intersection of Bebop and yachting is a weird one, but it did sort of happen at Newport.
At minute 2:00 of this Monk perf are some of the best renderings of the boats and people of the time--wooden hulls, yawls, sails that today look baggy but were state of the art then.
I didn't get to the jazz festival till '64, when BOb Dylan changed everything.
But back then it was cats from Harlem, unsung or half-sung inventors of a new music it took real effort to understand and was hard to dance to, who briefly mingled with college kids and the swells from Larchmont. Well, not really mingled. Sideshow, as usual. Monk would soon be gone, and this is a bored set for him.
The editing is all wrong, a scan of pale kids instead of seminal musicians, cutting away from a Monk original to watch a yacht race.
Man, what a weird intersection in the cultures. But better than none at all.
