Hello, just an intro.
My wife and I took sailing lessons on little Flying Junior racing boats last summer for fun and really loved everyting about it. We have been looking to buy a boat ever since, and finally got a 1974 Ericson 27' for $5,200. The inboard diesel was removed and an outboard mounted on it before we bought it.
We almost bought a 1966 Lapworth Gladiator that had been completely refirbished. It was bought out from under us - while waiting for the marine survey, some guy plopped down a deposit on it. We decided that next time we see a good boat, we would put down a deposit to hold it, pending outcome of the survey.
We found this boat. I noticed no spider cracks in all of the deck attachments and screws. Went home and did some research and found out a sister hull to this boat had set a world record to Japan. We met the owner and looked inside, my wife loved the interior. We talked to the owner and he agreed to a deposit to hold the boat pending outcome of a marine survey. The only problems the surveyer found were that we should secure the battery (there is one battery in a two battery holder) by bracing it in with a 2x4, and the old drive shaft needed a clamp where it once connected to the motor, so that it would not slip out and cause a leak in case the zincs deteriorated. We will just add a second battery, problem solved and the clamp to secure the prop shaft costs about 75 cents.
The surveyer asked my wife what we were paying for it, she told him and he said we got a really good deal on it. We are very happy, now I have to go down and transfer the slip and we're in business! Horray!!
I will post some of the survey results here when we get them back in a couple days.
